Nicnat Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Hi All. Rod hogger (8yr old son) and I have been a little quiet on the fishing front with only a few odd occassions in the past few months. Managed to upgrade the old tinnie as well during winter and have now done a few sea-trials in the new centre console but with only limted success so far. RH has even started grumbling on the last trip !!!! So I must say a very big THANK YOU to the Penguin who's post a couple of days ago inspired us to take the day off and head over to the oil wharf bright and early this morning. Started off at Watts Reef and landed several squid in quick succession. Then motored over a glassy bay to anchor up at the wharf. Burleyed a little and used the PPP trick (Penguin-Peeled-Prawn) and in the next hour and a half managed to boat around 20 trevally. Ended up keeping five for the table plus some fresh calamari. Rods were going off all the time with RH grabbing 90% of the fish but did get a couple were double hookups prevented RH having both. On 6lb gear we had a ball. Had a live squid out the whole time and didn't get touched (only sad point about the whole day). Even had a pod of dolphins keep us company on the way back to the ramp. Great day Good on ya Penguin!!
james7 Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I think the oil wharf will be a "parking lot" this weekend thanks to you and penguin. Those trevs on 6lb must have been fantastic. Do you float the peeled prawn out unweighted? You saw dolphins and penguin had a seal in his report. Despite the work being done around the Bay, it must be reasonably clean. Great report Nicnat and well done to to young Rod hogger. Top photos, and the new centre console looks good too. Cheers Peter
Penguin Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Well done Nic Nat, good to see you taking the young fella out and getting onto a few fish as well, the liitle guy sure looks happy. penguin
jewgaffer Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Well done on the Trevally Nicnat I like that console boat of yours. What make is it mate? It's amazing how many older fishermen finish up with console boats to have more room and to be able fish all the way around the boat. Apart from being able to have a good rod spread at the stern and the sides of the boat, you can fish a hands on rod off the bow easily and cast a lighter weighted bait or a lure directly into the current and retrieve just before the line goes under the bow. Cheers jewgaffer
brickman Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 great report is that a trev rod hogger is holding or a mirror some top pics as well penuin is a giver true raider form i used to use a home made lure, bait called the a t l at the murk for trevs useing a peace off squidd shredded at the trailing end can you guess what a t l stands for cherrs gary
Nicnat Posted November 12, 2008 Author Posted November 12, 2008 PeterS - Unweighted or with a very small ball sinker on top of the hook. A couple of times we could see them 2-3 mtrs below the boat so didn't have to go deep plus there was very little current Jewgaffer - It's a Sea-al 435. Only 3yrs old and just putting on the bits we want. Latest addition is the live bait tank which works great except at speed it get's more water into it than comes out (still working on that one ...) Brickman - Not a mirror but my poor photographic skills. Trying to hold rods, landing net, camera, bait up all at the same time whilst having RH constantly yelling "I'm on!!"
brickman Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 mate i recon that was a top pic and rh with the big cheesy by the way rod hogg is a classic name very funny i fish with a good mate who's name should be bloody useless cherrs gary
