Went for a few hours on the beach last night just after dusk with my best mate and frequent partner in piscatorial pursuits.

This was the first try I've had on the beach in years and my first ever shot at a beach jew, despite several promises I made to my self and ended up in the boat out of habit.

So we lobbed out some big squid baits into a likely looking gutter, tied on the glowsticks and grabbed a coldie.

Just on high, or there abouts my mates rod gets a few good hits, then mine goes off straight after :yahoo:

Down go the beers and we're running to the rods... I picked up the rod, had him ( for arguments sake, lets call him a 20kg jewie!) on for a good half a minute, then slackline.. :mad3: Damn.

The baits went straight back out and I got another hit not long after with a 2 second hook up that didn't work out!

We conceded defeat an hour and a half after the high with no more hits. Still, first go and to have at least put the baits in the right spot for a hook up of some sort on a weighty creature that felt for all the world like a jewie to me, but we'll never know.

Can't wait to try it again soon, the beach at night is an awsome place to spend you time I reckon.

Cheers all,

Dave

good stuff mate get back out there and bag one. I gave the beach a go for the jewies a few times and will again but there is something about not getting one from the beach. The sand all through my tackle box and gear is a constant reminder that I failed...bloody sand.\

I hope your out there now!

Cheers,

Joe

Bad luck Dave on missing out on a couple of good hits on the beach, gets very frustrating trying to sink in

the hooks on these jewies, especially when you know there will probably be just one hit or two in a night if

you are lucky.

I find that the baits dont have to be too big on the beach, next time try some smaller whole squid, strips or

fresh tailor fillets only big enough to hold the double hook rig & make sure the 2 hooks are well exposed.

When the fish hits the bait, lower the rod tip until the line comes real tight, then lift up & strike hard,no need to let the fish run with the bait at all, this way you will have a better chance of getting more secure hookups.

Im sure you will be back out there soon to try again on the next good tide's.

Cheers mate

Its the ones that get away that wets our appetite most. Sounds like your getting close to that big one. Good luck for next time.

Was fishing off north beach @ Port Macquarie aout this tme last year. Had a pillie out on 15lb gear, on my 'bit-of-everthing' rod and reel. Quiet, had checked the drag the last few casts and then got hit by a freight train. 5 seconds of zzzzzzzzzzzzzz with the rod trying to escape my hands and then ping...... :1badmood:

Having hooked small jews etc around there, this was like a freaking elephant, would have been a small shark, big ray or.......some bruising jew..sigh :1prop:

yes in some ways it certainly is the ones that get away that keep you hungry - I'll be up there in 4 weeks with 30lb gear and a nice snug drag setting and very very sharp knife. :mad3:

You can spot gutters and holes in the surf by where the waves go flat, then pick up again on the other side. This happens because of the deep water in the middle. Especially try to find a channel that leads out to the ocean. and yeah, this is the rip, or at least the main brunt of the rip as far as I know.

Any corrections on this are welcome!!

Hope it helps a bit.
