HI Guys & 2 Girls,

Can you give me your answers?.

Has any of you ever caught a Drummer on a fly, and if so add picture of fly, and explain your technique and set up please.

Also: for all you Rockhoppers, what rig and bait are you most successful.

I know some people may find this a boring/lame thread, but just wanted to see.

I have always used the same set up as when I go for Blackies- float, size 8 hook, and cabbage, except I use heavy line and a bigger rod and reel. The only difference is that I add bread with cabbage to burley. I have yet to catch a drummer on fly, but have caught blackies on weed fly.

Your replies would be appreciated

I fish for pigs a fair bit. I also use a fly rod for a lot of species but and I have never tried to catch a drummer on fly.

The best method I use for drummer is to burley heavy with bread. I have a 6144 rod with an old mitchell 500 reel and 25lb low stretch mono. I use the lightest lead I can so my bait does not hit the bottom but washes around to a mustard 542 hook in size 2.

The best baits I have found are peeled prawns or abelone gut. There is a ban on the use of ab gut currently to try and stop the spread the spread of a virus.

I do not konw if this helps.

Cheers

G'day Nanook,

I've caught one drummer on fly and lost a few more... The first I hooked off Barrenjoey while using a weed fly in an attempt to catch a blackfish. I was using a 10 wt rod and a floating line with the fly under a foam strike indicator...plenty of berley. The front 4 or 5 feet of a $100 fly line ended up shredded.

The other couple I hooked and the one I caught (at Stanwell Park) were deliberate using a bread fly with bread berley using the same technique (but with a ratty old line). Mate, it isn't the easiest way to catch them. I gave up after the 1st so that at least I could cross it off the "to do" list.

Cheers Slinky
