slicendice Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Hello, this is my first report so here we go: Well after moving from Canberra to Elizabeth Beach about four months ago and not having much luck close to home I decided to give Smiths Lake a crack. Friday: With my little 3yr old companion I set off past Frothy coffee and towards the channel. As we went around the point we were greated by a strong NE wind, so we headed back around into the bay to be sheltered from the wind. Found a nice little spot and was getting a few little bites but no hook ups. After about 20 mins we moved closer to Frothy coffee and cast out again. I turned around to talk to my little fella when all of a sudden I felt a big hit and line started tearing off my reel. To say I was excited was an understatement. I have never really caught anything decent before and especially nothing that caused my reel to scream before. I started to wind in and the fish took off again, man was I excited. I am glad no one else was around because they may have thought I was a bit crazy. My son loved it. Anyway after a little tussle I saw a flash of silver and as I wound it closer i saw that it was a bream. I let out another cheer as it was massive (well to me anyway) and picked the beast up. It measured 36cm and by far the biggest bream I have ever caught. With adrenaline pumping still I cast out again and got nothing for another half hour. I caught another bream only 23cm so he got to swim for another day. After that my little fella was getting a little bored so we went home with dinner. Saturday: After my effort on Friday decided to give Smiths lake another go with the wife and kids. Much nicer day with no wind so we fished the channel. Kids were swimming in the shallows while we fished. We caught a few tiny bream, leather jackets and a small flathead. After a nice afternoon one the last bit of prawn and the last cast, I felt the tinniest little pull on my line. I didn't think much of it and just left it there for a little while. I thin lifted my rod a little and felt some weight on it. I thought I had a big clump of weed on it so I wound in. Then all of a sudden there was a big shake right before my feet and I saw I had a flathead on my line. It went 44cm and it was the first legal sized flathead I have ever caught. Well lets just say I was a very happy boy, fresh fish for dinner two nights in a row....yum. Oh we were using cooked vanemi (spelling?) prawns with 6 pound mono.

arpie Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 (edited) Well done S&D - hadn't heard from you for a while!!! Were you fishing from shore or a boat? If you want to give Forster/Wallis Lake a go, I can show you a few spots ...... surprising how the water doesn't have to be very deep at all for some good fishing! God Blackies are still being caught off the breakwalls!! It was this time last year that I caught my biggest ever blackie from Tuncurry wall!!! Cheerio Roberta PS Great pics & top report! Love the little fella! Edited November 15, 2008 by Roberta
Peter Boukaseff Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Some nice fish there Slicendice, Smiths Lake is such a lovely spot. But did you know you are not supose to use imported prawns as bait in N.S.W.
slicendice Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 But did you know you are not supose to use imported prawns as bait in N.S.W. Did not know that. Someone from my wifes work suggested we use them. We will stop using them. ROBERTA I was land based. I should venture up the lake a bit. Only problem the little fella doesn't like fishing YET, so I need to go places were he can run around. It such a nice place... much better than Canberra, lived there for 12 years.
sails Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Hi Slicendice, well done on some good fish and also good to see you taking the little fellow out with you. Hopefully the little one will grow to like fishing and you will have a life long fishing companion to share the tight lines with. cheers Sails

Mate Smiths Lake is about 20 minutes drive south of Forster or if you meant specifically in Smiths, well its about 100m past the Cafe. Its a sensational place to live. slicendice Posted November 16, 2008 Author Posted November 16, 2008 Nice flattie, I might have to give the plastics a go
glennmreid Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 great report. I bet your son loved every bit see you catching those great fish. can't wait until my son is a bit older to share those moments.
slicendice Posted November 18, 2008 Author Posted November 18, 2008 Went back to Smiths this morning with the apprentice to have a go with some soft plastics. Never caught anything on them before. Fished for 30 min then landed my first fish on a plastic. 38 cm Flathead. He absolutely smashed the lure and gave a good fight but I was determined to catch my first on plastics.Sorry no pics this time as the apprentice broke the camera this morning. Well lets just say I think there is another soft plastic convert here. I was using a 3" Pogy in smelt.
