Perpendicular, Horizontal And Vertical Fishing

Hi Everyone.

Perpendicular, Horizontal and Vertical Fishing.

I'd like to hear general ideas on the above subject and particularly from fishermen who feel qualified to give an opinion on different ways of getting good results using any of the above methods.

Using Kingfishing as an example, Kingfish specialists are getting good results regularly and probably not realising what they are doing in regards to Perpendicular, Horizontal and Vertical fishing or why they are catching more kingfish than others who are using standard methods.

Just give your own opinion on what you think you are doing to catch fish when others are not and I should be able to work out which of the three methods you may not realise you are using.

Sharing whatever knowledge you have or innovative suggestions on these partiular angling methods would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Hi - Jewgaffer

Interesting post - you mean like the difference between trolling ( downrigging etc ) and straight up and down jigging ? Guess as you say Kingies are a good example, what seems to work Ok on occasions is locating them by downrigging then drop a squid straight down to em. Does not seem to worry some fish which way a feed comes at them.

As for me, I stick to the vertical stuff these days, the :wife: told me to cut out the horizontal stuff years ago. :1prop:

Hi Blood knot that's an excellent reply John  , and what a great way of locating your kingfish - trolling a downrigger to locate the school and dropping live baits into the hook up area.

Hi Josh

Thanks for asking Josh I meant to post this in fishing chat. This is an angling practice I learned while fishing the Lachlan as a kid and can be used for salt water fishing.

Perpendicular fishing is bouncing a bait off a structure etc when casting - - An answer could be "tying a bag of burley to a submerged log", or "busting up oysters on low tide" and coming back a little while later.

Horizontal fishing is getting hits off the surface or just below - one of the answers to this could be using a certain type a burley trail or giving other ways to encourage fish to rise.

Vertical fishing is fishing straight down the sides of the boat - an answer to this could be giving ways to jig baits or jigs and another answer would be giving ways to keep fish coming under the boat.

Cheers

I guess in that case ours is pretty mixed.

We do a lot of vertical stuff with baits for kings and other bits but thats mainly when baitfishing.

With lures it seems to be more horizontal, casting flats for flatties or into a pack of feeding pelagics.

wouldnt it depend on the type of fish you are tarketing and the situation?

for instance when lure fishing for bass plopping a lure into the water off a log or snag can bring an instant strike as can breaming the shoreline at night with no sinker - off a rock and plop into the water.(perpendicular)

however targeting striped tuna would probably be more successful trolling? (horizontal)or bottom bashing for nanygai or morwong (vertical).

I would apply all of these techniques at different times depending on the situation.

( I hope I have understood your post correctly.)

Pete.

Hi Pete in saying "lobbing unweighted baits" in close, you have understood the post correctly . I used older terms and should have said surface fishing methods in estuaries which include "trolling" ideas, using saltwater flies as in horizontal fishing , casting unweighted bait back off the "shoreline" or structure like I used to do when fishing for estuary cod (now protected), jack, bream etc and wanting to hear views on bottom jigging methods in estuaries for whatever species and add to that.

Cheers
