glennmreid Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I just purchased an ammeter gauge for my boat. Unfortunaely, the instructiions for the wiring are not very helpful, and I don't understand them. On the back of the ammeter there are 3 connections, S, G , I. I know G is for ground, so I assume that I only have to wire the G connector to ground. Where do I connect the wires for the I and S connectors to on the boat? Photo of the back of the gauge, and copy of the instructions are below.
arkedup Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 (edited) Hi Glen current(amps) is measured thru the positive wire only To put it simply find the pos wire on ignition cut it run one side of that wire to the s connection the other side to the i connection (use a fuse) the g is to be connected to neg wire on ignition (use fuse) However this will only give you the current draw thru the ignition not the full current draw on the battery I would never use 1 of these gauges as it will never show the full current draw on the battery and could cause you problems If you are not confidend with electronics you would be better to take it to someone who is Edited November 16, 2008 by arked

Does it need to be connected up to the alternator output wire as well?
IWANNABROCK Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Going by the wiring diagram, you need to cut the wire coming from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid, Put the wire from the ignition switch to the "I"on gauge, the other end to the "S" on your gauge.the "g" is for an earth wire straight from battery I would think to be the best.and the "L" would be for your light in the gauge, connected tom your nav light's.
