I have a quintrex trailer (tq58vbw) which has been making an odd noise when backed. It appeared to be coming from the right hand wheel - seemed to be the brake rather than the bearing. The trailer is 18months old. The noise now seems to have stopped but an inspection revealed a spring, about 30mm long and 10mm in diameter hanging from the caliper plate and not connected to anything. The hook at one end was missing - broken off. There was no spring at all on the left. I think the springs have been torn away when driving over some vegetation lining the track to my shed (I live on a rural property).

Does anyone know what these springs do and what effect will their absence have? The brakes appear to be working properly.

Photo would help

Have assumed cable override brakes and discs not hydraulic

Not sure if you know but if reversing there is a flip over piece of metal that stops the brakes being applied with override brakes . will stop brakes rubbing when reversing . You realy need it is it is a heavy boat and backing up a hill.

It is possibly the return spring that holds the pads away from the disk when they are not being applied? Only spring I remember on them. Should be one on teh other caliper on the other side??

+1 to what Pel said and posted pic. It is the brake return spring and we keep in stock so your dealer that sold you the rig should have them or if local come up and get one.

Cheers,

Huey.

The springs are to pull the brake lever back so as to release pressure off the pads and disc. If you have noise while reversing it sounds like the brakes maybe being applied while reversing. Your trailer hitch should have a horizontal sliding section that activates the brakes. If this is the case it should also have a flip over spacer that when in place wont allow the brake to activate . This should be in place when reversing. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks all - replaced the springs - b*gger of a job. Pelican - where did you get the pic? BTW, the springs provided by my dealer were slightly different from the broken one but seem to work well. The hooks on the ends of the springs had to be opened slightly to fit the holes.

Yeah like everything it is always so much easier on a bench whith brand new bits that are clean rather than in the dirt under a trailer- strange that. Always slightly different fittings and springs just to test your patience. At least your disc wouldn't have been rusty so that's a benefit of no spring for a while.

Can't remember exactly if it was CARVAN or trailerparts. I just did a quick google to put up a picture to make sure we were talking the same thing. The ARK ones are Aussie made I think- or were.

There is only a few manufacturers ( couple Aussie and several generic OS imports that companies who re- brand) so just about any trailer supplies website will have photos in brochures but half the time they will supply with whatever they are stocking.

This week one will come with one type of spring and next batch may well come with another. Some are galvanized an last a bit better. Same with bolt paterns if you have to get a new caliper - arghhhh why aren't they all standard!
