marcel haber
Sorry guys, When respooling braid off a large spool (say 1200 yrds) and you only need around 300 yards, is there any way to calculate how much line you have used. Twin

Nolongeramember
Measure how long one full turn of the reel handle cranks the line. Divide 300 yards by that, will tell you how many handle turns you need approximately to get 300 yards. That should work...
jewgaffer
Buy yourself a line counter. Great idea Big Banana! I reckon that's a better way than running your speedo for 300 metres while letting your braid out tied to a jam tin Cheers jewgaffer

As the diameter of the empty spool is smaller than the half full spool let alone the fulled up spool. And the larger the diameter of the spool will crank longer line for every full turn of the reel handle. Sorry if I'm wrong

If you measure with the spool half full you should be fairly close to the mark. I dont think he needs it exact..
jewgaffer
Hi Marcel. Rather than going to the trouble of buying a line counter and mounting it onto your rod in the reverse direction - reversing a line counter measures line going onto your spool as line going out i.e. your winding line onto your spool and measuring it instead of letting it out into the water and measuring it do as Sammy0884 suggested in his rely to your other post and, because you will be using the larger diameter braids for your jewfish, just fill your Shimano Baitrunner 6500 with new straight braid from your bulk spool until it tops at about 2 or 3mm below the lip of the spool. For backing, use a full overlapped wrap of duct tape, cutting the width enough to have your knot and starter wraps track into the tape to prevent the braid knot from slipping around the spool while your starting the wind on process. Make sure you have someone to hold onto the bulk spool with a long philipps screw driver thru it, check that the line is winding off the spool in an anti clockwise direction, and keep the pressure on your rod tip and wind the line on fairly tight. If you are ever spooling on mono, drop the rod tip to the floor after winding a few metres on. If there are coils in the line reverse the direction of the spool, check again and if the line looks better spool your line onto the reel. The loose line will never hang perfectly but the memory will improve with use. If you have another 6500 or another reel of the similiar capacity, you could spool the used discoloured braid straight onto your second 6500 and guestimate how much mono backing to add and then wind it back onto the reel it came off. It would be handy if you owned a second 6500 (Great jewfish reel and great value for money Marcel!!) or another reel of similiar capacity, using 300 metres of braid first off will give you plenty of unused braid on each reel when you need to cut some of the used or worn braid off and adding on extra mono backing saves you money on braid and gives you a fresh start. I hope this helps Cheers jewgaffer
