arpie Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Hi guys I went out fishing with Wendy on Tues & Thurs & stuck to fishing with only 2 lures - both hbs - a popper & a shallow diver! We fished the Breck Channel & caught some whiting on poppers & I also went behind the island a bit & managed to get a nice 55cm flattie on the diver & a couple of bream to 30cm on poppers! 30cm bream on popper - all put back 30cm whiting on popper - caught 3 - went to Wendy's home for dinner 55cm flattie on diver .... went home for dinner On Thurs I was playing around in the Breck Channel & got my first flattie on popper!! Popper flattie (put back) and then caught my first ever fish on one of my new SX40s ...... a big 65cm flattie!! Luckily it was in the shallows & away from structure, as it was caught on my lightest rod with 3lb braid & 12lb mono. I doubt if I would have landed it if in the leases!! She went back after a couple of pics 65cm flattie on SX40 Let go to grow some more All up, a good couple of days fishing, 'specially with hb lures! I am slowly getting the hang of them Roberta
nemo1203 Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Hi there roberta, great report and pics. One question is that a rebel clear popper. If so i have one and they work magic in the shallows. Good work with the hb's.
jahajo Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Great work roberta looks like you had a great time the colour of the water in the whiting picture is amazing Hazza
arpie Posted December 6, 2008 Author Posted December 6, 2008 Hi WMD - the flattie popper was one of Wendy's & could be a rebel - we swapped rods so that I could 'test it' as she wasn't catching fish on it!! After we swapped back, she got a flattie, too! ..... re the bream & whiting - not sure it might be a Strike Pro - I know I took off the feathers tho! Sometimes the bream and whiting are climbing over themselves to get to it! ....the colour of the water in the whiting picture is amazing... Hi Hazza - yep - people come from all over the world to look at the colour of our lake!! The lighter blue is the deeper water with a sandy bottom. The weed is gradually taking over tho! You have to see the colour of the water here on high tide! ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!! From the bridge, it is terrific! How lovely is that???? (not my pic!) I maybe a bit biased tho! :) the pic was in the channel (Breckinbridge) going off to the left. I fish all around the dark area in the middle between the 2 islands. Lots of blackfish both sides of the channel on the bottom side of the bridge. Cheers Roberta
taloyoak Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 right on Roberta nice catch!. It amazes me that Whiting take poppers- maybe I will have to try it. I usually only fly fish for Whiting. Thanks for the report and pictures!

The Iceman Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Always fun fishing Roberta Ive always thought HBs are far more effective over flats than SPs I cant wait foe Xmas as I will be doing quite a bit of surface fishing down at the Basin
glennmreid Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Great report Roberta. I love that aerial shot of Forster. Can't wait to come back in February. If Janet & I have our way, Forster will be our new home.
james7 Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Great report Roberta and fantastic photos. I still find it amazing that whiting actually take poppers. That big flattie was a beauty and well done on 3lb braid too. Well done to you and Wendy. Cheers Peter

Luke K Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 Hi Roberta, Some great fishing you and Wendy had there. Well done! Great Lizard too! I have not caught whiting or flathead on hard bodies, you've got me excited. I can't wait to try this in my holidays. see ya Luke
jewgaffer Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Well Done Roberta and Wendy!! These SX40's seem to do the trick. Being harbodies it would probably pay to up the line strength to avoid losing them. Cheers jewgaffer

I am slowly getting the hang of them Roberta Hi Roberta, Great fish, report and photos. Can I ask, what sort of retrieve did you get the whiting on with the poppers? Did you pause in-between 'bloops' or was it a fast, constant retrieve?
arpie Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 Hi Frankie It was a bit of both actually - they seem to prefer the faster retrieve, tho the odd pause works too!! Keep varying it till they hit! I had some follows (they look remarkable brown in the water!) that didn't hook up too Roberta
