aloupos
Hi Guys I'm quite new to the site, with this being my first post. Im heading up to Forster over the new year and would love to know where we can spend our time catching the resident fish. We have a small 3.5m tinnie ready to take us where we need to go. But where do we fish??? I have been told that there are some over sized bream, flatties and whiting through the system. We also might have a chance in catching some blueswimmers and prawns. Any help would be mostly aprreciated. Cheers AL

arpie
Hi Al the system up here gets pretty well flogged over Xmas/New Year & the fish shut down a bit, so for some decent fishing, it would be wise to be out fishing before dawn and/or after dark! Or go further afield - there are plenty of spots to toss a line where the flow or structure keeps the fish there. The prawning time will literally be over the Xmas week - I've never gone after Blue Swimmers, but see them when I am out prawning! Good luck!! Might run into you whilst you are up here! Let me know when you arrive Cheerio Roberta
aloupos
Thanks for that people! Roberta, could you let me know where the area known as the paddocks are? cheers AL
arpie
Hi Al Little Street runs along the edge of the Lake & there are a few islands that you can see (with breaks between them to access the larger lake) as you look out at the water. The closer you get to the bridge end of Little St the whole area behind the last 2 islands (including the leases) is called the Paddock. Very shallow at low tide & sometimes not able to get a boat in there over Xmas with the extreme low tides ..... or make sure you have your boat in deeper water before low tide happens ! Same with the island under the bridge - I have seen people anchor up there for a picnic when the tide is still reasonably high & when they go to leave, they are high & dry!! Not so bad with a tinny, but with a Bayliner or the bigger boats ........ Lots of bream flatties & Blackies, whiting too, all thru there - lots of oysters to snap off on too! aloupos
Hi Roberta, one last ? We are staying in Whoota (on the water), anything decent to catch in that area? cheers AL
arpie
Hi Al I have never fished Whoota - it is over near Coomba & I would imagine it to be a pretty shallow area covered in weed beds & the odd drop off. I would think that hbs slow rolled over the weedbeds would get you bream & flatties & whiting. Just be careful you are not going too fast in the boat so you don't get beached! Wear Polarised sunnies so you can see the changes in depth as you go along. At Xmas with the King Tides, you also get the King Lows (ie very low!) Just be patient - & may be try & find any island/sandbank & work all round it, I reckon?? Or go over to Forster & fish the racks & channels! Up at Coomba there are some good fishy areas too (and less fished than the main areas at Forster & Tuncurry!) Check out the Maritime Maps to see the shallow areas so you are aware where they are! This one should show you the Whoota area. http://www.waterways.nsw.gov.au/docs/maps/wallis_front.pdf Cheers Roberta
Lure'em
My family and I go up to forster over the shcool holidays and you will usually find that further up river the water is a lot deeper as a lot (and I mean a lot) of people use ski-boats over the christmas break. But you should find the water nice and deep if you stick to the main routes. Jack
bronte
Howdy, Been living here for 10 years & have given up fishing the lake (in daylight hours)over the christmas holidays. Just too many fools in boats in a relative small area. I counted one day, near the Paddock, about 150 boat movements in an hour & then some idiot decides to tow his kids in a biscuit through there. Channel is only 75-100m wide. Packed up & went home.
