braddles Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Hey guys , One of my new years goals is too hook a shark off the beach... Ive got a stella 8000 with 50lb braid and hoping to hook a big one..... ill be getting a 10 foot rod for it soon and plenty of freezed mullet... What size rigs should i use? metal? snelled 10/0s???? Whole mullet or filleted? might even score a jewie! Brad...
craigtempo Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 out of all my years beach fishing chasing jewies i have only ever caught 1 jewfish but can average 1 to 4 sharks per session so my advice is go fishing for jewies and you will catch some sharks . bronze whalers seem to move in to a gutter or a hole after dark any tide .ive never used wire .sometimes i keep a small one but generaly release all sharks caught . word of warning ive seen one latch on to a mate . it was kept so the throat was cut , 45minutes later he filletted the fish ,went to pick up the head and carcuss and it latched on to his hand . he was ok cause it was a small shark but it did produce blood . good luck craig

shane87 Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Depends on how serious you want to be when chasing sharks from the beach. The outfit you have will be fine for school sharks up to around 5 feet. If you want to target big sharks then an outfit more like a heavy LBG setup would be more suitable. Paddling big baits out on a board connected to a big outfit takes a lot of commitment but some huge sharks can be caught in close off the beach so why not have a go. Best of luck Shane.
