JayKay Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Hi guys, We've decided to take the family up to Nelson Bay for a bit of a getaway. Ive been up a few times before, but only managed to get some whiting while fishing. I dont mind this as the loves them and the kids enjoy the small stuff. But this time my dads coming up with us and his favourite fish is bream. He would gladly turn down a 4kg flathead to catch a decent bream. i dont want to look like a boofhead when we go out and dont catch anything, so does any know where there is a reliable part of the bay that could catch some bream. Just want to keep the old man happy. JayKay
braddles Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Are you landbased? or in a boat... If in a boat try going around the shore banks flicking lures under nearth fallen trees , shady structure... Peoples private wharves... Prawns make a good bream bait ive found aswell.... Brad
Berleyguts Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 If you have a boat and can duck just offshore from the entrance, if you anchor up in close on the western side of Cabbage Tree Island, you can berley with bread and use bread for bait and catch stud bream on the surface. Used to get plenty of bream there. It's not part of the marine park now, is it? Inside the Port, at the Corlette wreck; up in the Karuah River; up Lemon Tree Passage etc. - plenty of oyster leases. Land based: off the breakwall near the marina and off the co-op wharf. And if you want to see good-sized bream (but not fish for them as it's an aquatic reserve), walk into the water at Fly Point around the top of the tide with some bread and they will take bread out of your hand - grab a snorkel and mask and swim with the fish (bream, flathead, whiting, blackfish, mullet...) It's amazing and I thoroughly recommend it - I make sure I do this whenever I go to Nelson Bay. Tight lines. Baz
JayKay Posted December 17, 2008 Author Posted December 17, 2008 Thanks Baz, thats great. Hopefully i'll be heading up this weekend and we can get onto a few. Much appreciated. JayKay.
JayKay Posted December 17, 2008 Author Posted December 17, 2008 Hi Baz, I just checked it and it seems that all of the eastern, northern and southern sides of cabage tree is no fishing and western side is for bait fish only. never mind. I'll be trying to go fishing as much as i can this year because by next year we may not be allowed to fish in any part of the coast due to the greens.
