Juzza
Hi, im having problems fishing off the rocks with an alvey. right now i have a 13ft rod matched with a 6500BCVRR alvey spooled with 25lb mono. I use a patenoster rig with a decent sized sinker so i can get some casting distance. So far, i think i have pretty much mastered casting without problems and retrieving line without tangles. But catching fish seems to be a problem! I GOT REEFED 5-6 TIMES TODAY BY DECENT FISH! lost quite a few sinkers....Whats the reason? Hooking the fish isnt a problem =D i feel good weight and a run...Anyway, when i strike i like to retrieve quite fast to get it off the bottom (as im fishing less than 3m of water). If there is some delay in retrieving line...ie a delay of 1 sec after striking theres a good chance to getting reefed! This delay is probably due to line burns on my finger when i just start retrieving really fast, as the line isnt moist (does anyone have a solution to this problem?), i got a double burn on the same spot today...OUCH!!!!! Im targeting reef fish =], and the odd drummer/rockblackfish and snapper Justin
luderick59
hi justin you must be fishing over reef try spots where reef meets sand for snapper a small pea size sinker will do for drummer as drummer are close in near the washes use the line guide before you start to wind in this will take pressure off your finger then use your finger to spread line evenly without the pressure on to the reel or use a piece of bicycle inner tube over your finger also try using old spark plugs just close the gap over a swivel when snagged it will open no lost lost hooks peter
hottyscotty
are you using your hand as drag on the spool? don't always use the drag that are on alveys, they're pretty crap. i only use enough drag so when a fish takes the bait, it ain't going to take line off that turns into birds nest
Juzza
I guess the technique would vary depending on the location and type of fish. Generally the reefy areas that iv been fishing for years have been good for wrasse and groper. I just lock the star drag tight as possible and if i get something i usually skull drag the fish out. Somehow using an eggbeater i was reefed by the fish less, this has now increased with the use of the alvey. But! the distance i get is GREAT, i can fish new territory, especially in reef spots. brickman
as peter said you need to fish broken reef for snapper but if your fishing 3 meters you can proberly loose the lead and use a float instead better still use a garfish on gang hooks and do a slow retreve in the washes when your going to retreve wind in the slak and lift the rod as you would to set a hook that will get your lead off the bottom and a fast wind should keep you clear off snags after many years on the stones i set a spapper jew rod out and set and forget and then consentate on the spinning rod with a gar on gang hooks for tailer and kings cherrs gary
