Simple Security Measure For Sliding Windows

Hi all

WIth Xmas upon us & increased activity of ALL SORTS going on in the neighbourhood ....... have you thought of any simple security tips for your house (whether you are in it over the break, or going away?)

With the hot weather, most folk leave a bedroom window open day and/or night (also the bathroom/toilet areas), but this leaves the house open to burglary. Most of us have a bit of dowell shoved in the channel so that it can only be opened up a 'pre-determined' gap ..... however, sliding windows are easily lifted out of the channels once they are opened, with very little noise, so you can still be broken into without you awakening!

Keith came up with a simple way of preventing sliding windows from being removed! After putting the dowell behind the window, take another bit of dowell & slide it along the top of the window (it may need to be a bit thinner than the stuff you have put along the bottom tho, or it may impede opening or shutting the window!) He used a bit about half as long as the window & pushed it into the middle of the window.

The window now, can't be removed from the frame!

What ideas have you come up with?

Cheerio & have a safe Xmas/New Year!

Not bad and very cheap to do, but personally i would buy window locks that you install yourself for around $20 each with the only tools needed being a Cordless drill, In saying that though the problem is if they really want to get in they will.

Yep, but they'd have to break the window, making lots of noise tho! Most of them would want nice quiet entry in case folk are inside - I would hate to be broken into whilst I was in the house & would hope to sleep thru it, as the thought of confronting them would be too horrible to contemplate!! It was bad enough when they got into the awning of our campervan & Keith disturbed them!

With lots of windows $20 x ?? becomes a bit expensive tho  The dowell really is quite effective.

In a buddy's shop, we shoved some dowell top & bottom to wedge it at a set width as well as the other end too, but he does have security mesh on it too! :1prop:

Cheers

i was having a drink with my mate the other night, and he told me that both his neighbors got broken into the other night, Xmas time is a busy period for the scumbags!

I have a 60kg Akita that instills fear in anyone once he howls/screams (seriously its scary) and he sleeps at the front door, and he doesn't make a sound unless something is up.

That said, for an quick fix for sliding window security, just get a screw, and screw it thru the window frame, into the window. costs like nothing if u have some screws hanging round. Its unbeatable as well, the window cant move, the obvious being that u need a screwdriver to open the window, But like mentioned earlier, get proper locks for windows u use regularly, and just screw the ones u don't.

cheers
