Jewhunter
G'day all. Slinky has made the move to the Gold Coast. After spending the week unpacking he was hanging for a fish so we lined up to meet today & have a fish together in his boat for the first & not the last time! Slinky had his FIL, Peter, with him so we headed out the river & across an easy bar crossing. First plan was to get some livies but the swell was up a bit to fish the sand pumping jetty so we moved to the snapper rocks bait grounds with everyone else. No luck so we gave up on the livies & decided to troll our way to the Tweed nine mile reef. We didn't pick up a fish on the troll but went past a charter boat that had a small marlin dancing around at the back of the boat. Arriving at the reef it was obvious to why the marlin was around. 25 degree water & a very nice colour. We sounded some fish but only managed some goatees so we kept moving around. Whilst on the move we saw some surface feeding so the boat was pointed that way. Slinky stopped & started casting a metal at them. Thinking they were mack tuna I didn't bother & dropped my plastic down deep. A couple of lifts into the retrieve & whack, yep I'm on. It felt like a good fish with plenty of weight to it. I had it on a pretty tight drag though so it didn't go far. Got colour after a few minutes & was rapt to see it was a cobia. Slinky whacked the gaff in & I was stoked. 90cm cobia, about 6-7kgs & my first on a plastic. My p.b as well! We just kept the drift going & there was plenty of surface activity. It all got too much for me so I threw on a metal & cranked as fast as I could. 2nd cast & I'm on. Couldn't believe it when up popped a jellybean yellowfin! Slinky then put a metal onto his bream gear & let rip. He's on in no time & boy wasn't that little reel howling. We almost chased it but it turned & he won alot of line back. A few minutes later & another little 'fin in the boat. I must say it was a top effort from Slinky & looked like a hell of a lot of fun. A few boats were chasing them now & they got a bit skittish. Time for a troll. Peter picked up another 2 on a baitcaster which was also great to see. The nor'easter started to kick in so we headed for home. The bar at low tide was a bit messy but Slinky did a great job & got us back easily. I've got to say a big thankyou to Slinky for having me on board. Mate you're a fine fisho & a damn good skipper as well. Throw in plenty of laughs & some fine eating fish & what more can you ask for? Cheers, Grant. My cobe. A jellybean. Slinky losing alot of line very fast! Top effort on bream gear.
Hodgey
The Fishraider Connection does it again! Congrats on a great little session fellas. That's a terrific cobe, Grant, and a PB as well. As usual, Slinky has taken a knife to a gun fight ... and won A top effort on the bream gear Tony. Glad to read Peter got onto the fish as well. QLD fish: Be afraid ... be very afraid Cheers Hodgey
jewgaffer
Well done Grant and Slinky I would have liked to have been up there with you. Somehow I was out there with you while I was reading the report. Grant, I told Slinky never to sell that Quintrex, it's one of the best boats I've fished on and that model has it all Slinky needs for Queensland fishing. I know one thing for certain, two good blokes like you two fishing together means friends for life. Cheers jewgaffer

slinkymalinky
a great day out and thanks to Jewhunter for great guiding and great company. A couple of facts that he politely overlooked in his report: - I learned today about the stupidity of different time zones between either side of the border when I rocked up an hour late to meet a very patient Jewhunter. That would be "let's meet at 5.00am NSW time! I thought it looked a bit light! - From overhearing one side of the conversation Jewhunter had with Swordy, I think Stewy was almost apopleptic that we weren't chasing the marlin that were out there. Sorry Stewy... when I get the rest of my gear out of storage I'll make sure I pack some pushers but those jellybean fin were just too tasty to bridle up. - The Tweed "no mate, it's probably the quietest bar on the coast" bar was very hairy at low tide on the way back in. I don't get to practise bar crossings too much launching at Roseville but thankfully the Quinnie was up to it and tracked nice and straight. I had to change my shorts when I got home after sitting nicely on the back of a wave only to be told to look behind us and realizing that the curling green wall of the next wave was only 6 or 8m behind our stern. Man, they were closely stacked. I'm off now to get the sashimi ready for the mini slinkys. Thanks for a beaut start to life up North mate. Cheers, Slinky
BrettP
Hey Slinky, Thanks the phone call. I was instantly jealous. Great shots and looks like the move is going well. I am entering negotiations with the minister for war and finance for a sneaky weekend on the Gold Coast, Have to approach these matters gently, so it should take a couple of months and a few "yes dear, we can watch Sex in the city again", but I think it can happen. All the best with the move and hope to catch up shortly. Cheers Brett

I was cleaning the house Were you wearing your cleaning clothes (that nice dress you have) while you were waving that feather duster around? We need to compare techniques mate..... Sandini
Well done lads. Those cobia are a great feed and also good fighters. This time last year we picked one up in close to Catherine Hill Bay on soft plastics. Could see him coming and with his fins flared, looked like a shark. They have the largest mouth and just vacuum the bait. I hope that you have many more great sessions up there. Sandini
Jewhunter
Thanks for the replies all. It sure was a fun day. The cobe was fantastic on the tooth & the 'fin made awesome sashimi as usual. Boban, as for Stewy calling me a turd, well, you know what he usually calls me!! That's the nicest thing he's called me for ages! Slinky, it was as much my fault on the time thing mate. I didn't make it clear & I know better! The quietest bar on the coast. Mmmmmmm it was a bit ugly wasn't it! However, you handled it like a pro mate & Byron is right, that's an awesome hull. Can't wait to fish in it again. Cheers everyone, hope you all had a wonderful Xmas. Grant.
