Kiwi Dan
Hello all, On Saturday I unfortunately chipped a piece off my propeller while reversing and hitting a rock. Is anyone able to tell me if its hard to change the propeller? I was hoping it would be a matter of buying a new one un doing a few pins or nuts and bolts and chucking the new one on. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
chrisg
Easy Dan. Straighten the split pin and wiggle out with some long-nose pliers. Loosen the big castle nut and slowly remove noting the order and direction of any spacers..there's usually one that needs to be the right way round. Give the prop a short tug and slide off, again noting direction of any spacers/washers behind the prop. Lay them out in order on some newspaper helps. Fitting is a reverse, remembering to take this opportunity to smear some boating grease on the shaft and check for any line or debris wrapped around the shaft. Nip the castle nut up finger tight and tighten with a socket until the a new split pin can go thru the castle nut and hole. It should be tight but not so tight that you deform the spacers. ie don't try and drive it further to the next hole if its tight already. Slip a new pin in, fold the ends over and away you go. There are places that repair prop dings so don't throw it out..might be worth a fix. Cheers C.
Kiwi Dan
Thanks Chris, Do you know where I would be able to get a new propeller from and do i need to but a specific mariner part or is it a one size fits all part? The piece which is chipped is about half the size of a 50c piece. With a chip that big is it still okay to use the boat over the next few days or should I definitley get it changed? Im just thinking it will be a bit hard trying to get the propeller at this time of year.
chrisg
I wouldn't use it Dan if its that big..you'll get a lot of vibration...not good for the gearbox. You'll need a Mariner/Mercury prop..have a ring around the dealers..try Craig at Huett Marine, he might have something kicking around. Sometimes outboard repair places have used ones for sale. The size will be stamped on your old prop. Cheers Chris
