Botany 13-01 (kings W/ Bycatch Of Jew + Snapper)

Hello all,

Hit the bay this morning with the plan of landing some kings, we had a good feeling today so we decided to bring the camera and ice (we usually bring neither)

Got a couple squid into the live bait tank, and decided to anchor up for some kings,

I decided i wanted to have some fun so I fished with 6 pound line with 10 pound trace (my flathead setup).

first bait out gets smashed pretty quickly within the first few minutes I was on and after a fight a rat kingie was landed (57cm)

Next my mate was on (fishing 20 pound line w/ 40 pound trace), we thought it was a good king it was heavy but didn't go on any crazy runs and went all around the boat (lucky we decided to bring our lines in) and guess what emerges ? 85cm Jewfish... best by-catch. hi-5s all round.

then we both got dusted a few times i kept fishing light but my mate got busted of a few times also felt like good kings but i doubt it.

then my other mate hanging to catch a king gets a good strike and brings up the fish it didnt fight too great untill it seen the boat then it took a run.. and again guess what emerges ? a good snapper, didnt get the measurements but for the bay it was definately a good size.

after that we kept fishing with squid strips (running on a low supply of squid) and I had a long fight with a king, took a few runs got some line back and more runs back and forth, then it went a hid in the reef but then i released the spool of my reel, another run and then BANG.. dusted, I was spewing..

also last bit of prawn my mate catches 1 yakka and throws it out within 30 seconds it was smashed and another rat king landed and thrown back.

Best day I have had on the bay by far pity about no kingie keepers... noticed a few other people keeping some undersized kingies, I wish fisheries was there...

Pics for all

Nice fish mate particularly the snapper.

I have seen plenty of people keeping undersize Kings recently and boy does it get me fired up! - i find a polite gobful usually works... Failing that i tell them they're a #$ck#ng #ick #$ad and that seems to do the trick. I can't believe that others just sit there and watch them do it without saying anything...

Well done Andrew  your pm flashed up on my computer and the first thing I saw was 85cm jew. I'll bet you were excited catching a jewfish in the Bay durng the day...... It's a very good sign and the fact that you caught it half way up the morning tide tells us that the jewfish might have come in overnight and stayed..... so it might be time to fish the Bridges in the Cooks and the Georges Bridges from the stillwater thru to the top and stay on for most of the run out as well...... Snapper schools around that size and under used to come into Gunnamatta Bay and Burraneer Bay in the Hacking at the end of summer and were active in the deepwater sections near the top of the tide at night........ The snapper would come in like clockwork and it seemed no only the snapper but all else went quiet just before the jewfish arrived, as we used to get a jew or two if were we lucky an always not long after the general bite went dead .........The way the season has been with the inside temperature higher than outside in close which is a perfect scenario in Autumn for breeding schools, maybe some of the species are starting to feel autumn conditions....I wouldn't be surprised if lots of big bream don't hit the estuaries early this year, perhaps anytime now, as the bream fishermen struggled to get mature fish right back from the wintery autumn last year..... the sea temperature balanced out and that saw a big influx of flathead in spring and there have been a few good size bream caught in the last week or so.

Cheers

well done! That is so awesome. I hit the bay today too, but got stuck in a meeting so didn't hit the water till 3pm and the only thing I got was wind blown... the only catch was a perfect swoop of the net retrieving my hat! :1badmood:
