Poddy Mullet

One of the best bream baits is a freshly fillleted big poddie mullet.

If your poddies are small give them a nick through the bottom to let the guts hang out.

Any freshly dead poddie is better then a frozen servo prawn.

If any poddy mullets die, must they be returned to the water ? Ive heard that poddy mullets have to be used live, what if the mullet dies whilst rigging it up/hooked?

Hi Raii Mullet over 15cm have a bag limit of 20 (per person) but you can keep an extra 20 for live bait if they are under 15cms and the only size limit for mullet is 30cms for bull mullet. Dependent on the number of persons fishing, there is no boat limit above that as such. You asked in a pm about keeping poddy mullet alive... you need a couple of buckets of saltwater and a fish tank pump, the 240 volt white saltwater model which cost about $35.00 from memory and worth buying for keeping saltwater nippers and mullet alive overnight after a bait gathering session.......... They mention that small poddies uner 15cms are to be used as live bait only which is confusing as you can still use them for cut bait if they die... and as Dave said do open them up and rather than having a whole fish lying lifeless on the bottom take some skin sections off too and also do scale the bigger mullet before butterflying.

By the way Ray, there was no mention of cooking up bait size poddies and as far as eating sushimi poddy mullet goes, in my opinion it would be the equivalant of eating a garden slug.

Cheers

hey, i kept 5 about 10-15cm long in a 20L bucket for 6 days without changing the water or topping it up at all. I fed them little bits of bread every now and again. They are very hardy. I let them go after the 6 days because i was going away and they swam away no troubles! You do need an aerator though, you can get them from an aqaurium shop for like 10 dollars.

keeping them alive is no problem, but i was just wondering about the dead poddy mullet part, can we cut them into strips and use them as ive heard of the 'only live' use of poddy mullet

Also, for flatties/bream, how would you suggest to rig whole dead poddies/strips of poddies, hook size etc.
