marcel haber
Hi fellow Raiders, Just a quick report, hit the hawkesbury today with my brother and his son. The plan was to catch some livies and soak them for a jew or two. Catching the livies was not a problem and we had so much fun catching them. Tried Flint and Steel for one small run which the fish spat out.....we called it for a jew. Also tried Juno and the rail bridge for no takers. Had a great day on the water and it was just great to be out there. Kept some yellowtail and mackeral for a feed. Twin 1 Marcel

Twin 1 Marcel I would love to get a few of those slimies for outside baits, I managed to get some yellowtail at West Head in close under the pill box but no sign of slimies. Where did you find them? tide'n'knots
hey marcel, well done mate on the bait situation. dont underestimate the value of slimey fillets for jew they are gun bait! I caught a few at flint and steel last year and a couple of weeks later the frozen fillets caught me a 14lb jew and a 9 lb jew in about 1/2 hour! I also got a 20lb jew at south west rocks a couple of years back and my mate got a 32lber and I lost 2 others near the boat ( i think in all the excitment my hook was blunted by the 20lber and i didnt check it)my advice is hang on to them until april/ may then fish wisemans ferry with them and you are a real good chance of getting a jew on them! zen801
Hi Marcel, Mate it was a hot one eh! I went out in MH for a few hours for one keeper flattie. Mate if you can catch and use fresh bait the jewies wont be too far behind. Those yellowtail are good eating. Cheers Mike
olitay
Do you guys eat the yakkas if they have the Doctors in their mouths?? I love BBq'd yakka but am turned off as soon as see a little white Bug struggling to say alive in their Mouths.
plankton
The big Slimies are good looking baits. I'd be putting them down butterflied somewhere in the river and holding on! The Yakkas tails look as though they have been scaled using sandpaper

Cheers Mike Mike it was very hot which made the fishing a little uncomfortable......we may have to invest in a canopy. It would be nice one day to be out on the water and convert the livies into something special like a big jewie. We had one good run at flint and steel and we would have been happy just to see the fish, the reel started to scream and line was taken only for the fish to spit the bait out...... boy when the rod buckled and line peeled off this surely gets the blood flowing and the heart racing. We will have to catch up on the water this year mate. Twin 1 Marcel. Edited January 21, 2009 by twin1
jewgaffer
....... the reel started to scream and line was taken only for the fish to spit the bait out...... boy when the rod buckled and line peeled off this surely gets the blood flowing and the heart racing. Twin 1 Marcel. Talk about keen, you and Ray deserve a big jew, I reckon when you catch one the applause will bring the house down Give the fish no quarter Marcel! ..... There is plenty of angle between the rod tip and the fish to keep the pressure on and if the fish is big enough to turn a tight drag setting, only allow the fish to run sideways and in half circles.... You having the leverage will soon tire out the fish, and you'll have that big jewfish in you boat in no time When talking big jewfish, you can have as much rod bending fun as you like on say a 10-50lb rod combined into 50lb for backbone and 10lb for sensitivity with a reel equivalent to say a Penn 750's-950's which I'm sure you have and 60 - 80lb braid is in no way an overkill for the reel or the species...... There's no need to risk losing any estuary fish by fishing under the weight of your target fish..Don't risk spit outs either, tighten that drag up mate till it starts to cut into your little finger before it moves..... Only have your reel slightly in gear to have a larger livie struggle to swim and give out line when you feel a hit... and the jew may pause to turn the bait around before moving off..... So just watch for the next line movement before you grab hold of your spool and bring the jew to a split second stop and set the hooks...... A livie's not an artificial bait, just let it swim distressed, it is distressed in the first place and fish cull to clean up the environment whether they are feeding or not..... The only estuary fish that will ever have my drag turning is a whopping big jew or a shark and it would upset my day if I have an unstoppable before I identify the fish or a drag setting set up for a spit out....... The only estuary fish that I ever use a relatively loose drag on or open the spool to feed out line to keep the line slack is when fishing for whiting using ultra lightweight mono line, and even then I use strong enough line to suit the maximum weight of the species.... Whereas when we are talking jewfish, we are talking heavy duty 8/0s and 10/s and hooks of this size really don't belong on inappropriate lines.... iIt's all about the gear, the rigs and the bait and you can have all the fish playing fun you want out of the better quality fast action rods without either going too far under or over for the species. Marcel keep at it mate, that big jew will come along for Ray and yourself sooner than you think......... Cheers jewgaffer
OSHISWET
Thanks Byron, Marcel and I can not wait till we crack that ellusive jew. All the gear is right, its just a matter of getting out there and putting in the time. I hope 09 is the year for us. We listen to all the hints you fellow raiders give us and it will be nice to hear that line peel off our Shimano 6500 bait runners.
