hey guys doing my last year at school now and for my HSC major work i was thinking of doing something with alot of pilchards.... does anyone know a way to preserve the colour, look of the fish and keep it from rotting and stinking?

Salting and drying , smoking has it's own affect but the lustre is missing. Hand it in fresh - at least they would mark it fast or you could embalm them but not sure how fish colour and formaldahyde go.

Who was that German sounding guy who preserves all the humans and then strips away layers to show veins and muscle or slices - used a plasticiser agent.

If all you want to do is look at it can you set it in clear resin? a margerine or chinese take away container would probably work for a mould for 1 or 2.

try painting one with a layer of nail polish and see if it rots.

If you need to do different experiments with them over time you may need to see if anyone here knows anything about freezing them in seawater or use IQF Pillies and thaw them out as you need them.

Or as previously mentioned keep buying them fresh.

Maybe if you give us a few more details, we can give you a few more ideas.

You've got me intrigued... What are you doin with 'alot of pilchards'. sounds like more of a muck up day prank than a major work.

...and i reckon sqizzytaylor hit the nail on the head, Alcohol IS the answer to so many of lifes problems :beersmile: ... Just kiddin'
