WillN Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Hi raiders, I've heard that fireline is only really effective in the lower weight ranges and that it gets too stiff once you move past a certain rating. I'm looking at buying 14lb and 20lb braid, what brands do you all suggest? I'm not looking to spend too much either, but i'm open to suggestions! cheers, Will
johnno Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Personally i like power pro in the 20lb and 15lb i have 14lb nitlon which i am not overly happy with it as i kept getting wind knots when it was pretty new now it is worn in it is pretty good. i have also used fins PRT up to 20 lb and was happy with it but also needed to be worn in a little. i was thinking about giving the bass hard 20lb but the price is a little pricey but i have heard good things about it.
strewth Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Have used TufLine XP, Fins PRT, and Sufix Performance Braid, and Sunline Castaway in 30 lb on baitcasters with no drama. Tufline and Fins do the job, but SPB and Castaway are thinner. Suspect the SPB might be better on eggbeaters, as it is not a limp as the others.
Josh88 Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Thats correct about fireline, i don't go past 10lb with it. Tufline is ok but it frays a lot, Suffix is very good, i find it better the heavier you go, fins is also good but does need a little bit or wearing in as said. A brand i found in north queensland i think it might of been called amnesia, i've got some in 20lb and its fantastic, never caused me any grief. What are you mainly using it for? Cheers Josh
Captain Spanner Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Myself and a mate fish suffix 20lb braid from 4000 stradics. mine is on a 6-10kg xcel weapon and his is on a 6-10kg starlo stick i think. great for casting, no real problems with wind knots or know strength. Like most softer braids it doesn't have outstanding abrasion resistance. I have 30lb fireline on 6500 baitrunners which is pretty tough stuff but doesn't cast light weights (unweighetd 6 inch stick baits) very well (Big baits aren't as bad). i think the cross section of the fireline is a funny shape but as it doesn't lie on your spool as neatly as some other brands, thus decreasing line capacity. just my experience.

Cheers Josh thanks for the replies guys, just so my question isn't that general, i'm using this line on a spinning reel, and i'm hoping to use it for: 1. Off the rocks; spinning metals, bait fishing for drummer etc 2. Off the beach; soft plastics, metals and bait fishing thanks for all your help!
slinkymalinky Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 You're right about Fireline. Any good quality brand of braided Gelspun is a much better choice. A lot have already been mentioned and they are all worth considering. Just steer clear of cheapie brands. What seems like a bargain may cost you a lot of headaches. Cheers, Slinky
