hi raiders, fished the harbour today with my mate Joe and experienced something I hope I never experience again!

The morning started at about 630 at balmoral chasing squid, after about 45 mins of catching zilch we noticed some birds working and fish breaking the surface so we decided to have some fun and tied on some chrome lures figuring that they were probably tailor.

1st drift through the school and joe hooks up on a nice tailor - joe 1 me 0.

second drift joe hooks a nice salmon - joe 2 me 0

3rd drift joe hooks a bonito - joe 3 me 0.

4th drift joe gets another salmon - joe 4 me 0.

Im thinking WTF????

so joe hands me his rod thinking the lure being slightly different to mine could be the problem.

2 more drifts and now neither of us are catching any!!

time for a change of tactics! so next drift i floated out a frozen squid head and next thing over bends the rod and finally Im on - a couple of winds later and the fish throws the hook!

joe 4, fish 1 me still 0.

another drift and exactly the same senario - joe 4, fish 2, me 0.

Time to get some livies so we headed over to our favorite livie spot and in no time flat had about 20 yakkas about3 inches long - perfect!!

by now the wind had picked up and had made conditions really uncomfortable so eventually we decided to anchor up at clifton gardens and wait for a kingie to find us.

After about 15mins joes rod buckles with a frozen squid on it and 1min later a rat kingie 60cm hits the deck

- joe 5 fish 2, me still 0.

5 mins later I get a hit on some squid, pick the rod up, lower the rod as the fish takes the bait strike hard and hook up - a couple of winds later - you guessed it - joe5 , fish 3, me still 0!

then joe gets 2 more rats in the next 1/2 hour or so - joe 7 fish 3 me still 0.

Then everything went a bit quiet for the next 1/2 hour or so and next thing I see my livie rod jerking as the liviie is being attacked so I pick up the rod let the fish take the livie then strike hard and come up so;id on a king that was definately fish of the day around 70cm, after a couple of mins and nearly having the kingie beat I foolishly made some comment about how I wanted a photo for the fishraider sight - what do they say about counting your chickens, suddenly the kingie dives and a massive shark 3 ft across the head emerges from the depths and inhales the kingie WHOLE!

joe7, fish 2, shark 1, me still 0.

needless to say things went very quite again, and about 1/2 hour later approximately 100mtrs from the back of the boat a shark ( i am assuming the one that ate my kingie) launched out of the water like a whale!! looked to be about 10 ft long, awesome sight!!

Not sure what kind of shark but it had a rather blunt nose like a tiger shark, so maybe a tiger or perhaps a huge bull shark, both times we didnt get a clear look because it was down to deep the first time and to far away the second time.

I did eventually manage a rat kingie 60cm!!!!

final total - joe 7 , fish2, shark 1, me finally1

Lazy bugger just hanging around nailing everyones' kings.

Its acually quite scary to see a shark that size up close, I couldnt believe how easily it got the kingie. It looked like a grey submarine swallowing a sardine!

Luck had certainly avoided you that morning, Pete. :(

That bloody noah is going to push his luck too far soon. I reckon he will be making a guest appearance on the forums if he keeps pinching peoples' hard-earned kingies.

Keep the reports coming mate

OMG!!! Top post, Pete!! Shame about that bloody shark getting your kingie tho!! I think Joe is a Jonah to you! :(

Absolutely a case of 'counting your chickens before they hatch!' :1badmood: ..... but if you had brought it straight in ..... you wouldn't have seen the shark!!!

They are warning everyone not to swim anywhere in the harbour just now - because of the huge number of large sharks being sighted, especially by the fishing charters.

Better luck next time

Hi Justin,

2 weeks ago my anchor got stuck in about 15ft of water and joe and I both dived down to try and free it, later at another spot a bull shark followed my squid jig and yesterday that shark would have bitten a human in half! I wouldnt put my big toe in the water now and I feel a bit lucky that our anchor problems didnt end up being much bigger problems!!!!!

hi gary a full dead mullet under a balloon in a burley trail will fix his red wagon!!!!

It may be time to break out the game fishing gear, heavy wire, and 12/0 hooks!!!

I think I need a bigger boat!

hi roberta,

I dont think joe is a jonah, i have outfished him on occassions - thats fishing !!! I like to think its because joe is an exceptional fisho ( just dont tell him I said that) :074: The shark did jump out of the water later like a big mullet! so I think i would have rather seen the kingie in the bottom of the boat!

Hi Roberta - There are huge schools of bait in the Harbour and the sharks are definately around.

Who is warning people not to swim in the Harbour atm... DPI, Local Councils, Maritime? I havn't heard so.

Nice haul Pete. There are biggies in the River too, but you don't see them becuase of the colour of the water. The ducks cop!

One of the Sunday papers (in an editorial and in Lockwood's Fishing Column) has told of many huge sharks in the harbour just now.

People have forgotten that victims have been taken (fatal) in knee deep water at Middle Harbour & elsewhere in the harbour (survived.)

Just now, with the abundance of baitfish, the warmth of the water & a known fact that the sharks go up into shallow water for breeding ..... I won't be swimmin' in the harbour unless in a protected pool! :1yikes:

If you want to look at all shark attacks in the world from the late 1700s check out this blog & open the Shark Attack Spreadsheet data - it has an excel file that is pretty well up to date to last week.

http://blog.richway.com/index.php?/archive...rk-Attacks.html

I think you will be amazed at how many of the attacks in NSW, fatal or otherwise, are in the Harbour!

Funniest report I've read for ages. More please!! Great read and great fishing (for your mate anyway...). I think I'm glad I'm up in QLD now to avoid the shark swarm.

Hi Pete,

good report and a good read; and glad to see that Long Reef isnt the only place that has the odd bit of trouble with noahs.

What ever happened to those fishermen that used to target big sharks? surely there is someone around that wants a set of jaws to adorn the garage walls.!! :biggrin2:

cheers

i am seriously thinking of going back with gamefishing outfit, wire trace, huge hooks and a couple of dead mullet, 1 on the hook under a balloon and the others through the burley pot.

but it will have to be in joes boat - mines not big enough!!!!!
