tide'n'knots Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 hi guys I have a freind who is currently visiting his folks up near coffs harbour and has promised to bring me back some beach worms. On the weekend the girlfreind and I stayed at jamberoo and came home on sunday arvo along the great ocean drive, first time for both of us and not being familiar with that area I noticed that there was some fairly fishy looking areas around coledale. Good rock ledges that i am sure would hold good drummer and blackfish and nice looking beaches. I am thinking next month leading up to the full moon trying for a jew with the beachworms, can anyone suggest a good spot in that area? I noticed that some of the beaches are only rather short with good rock ledges either end, I am thinking in a gutter alongside the rocks from the beach somewhere???
jewgaffer Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 hi guys I have a freind who ....has promised to bring me back some beach worms. .......... I am thinking next month leading up to the full moon trying for a jew with the beachworms, can anyone suggest a good spot in that area? I noticed that some of the beaches are only rather short with good rock ledges either end, I am thinking in a gutter alongside the rocks from the beach somewhere??? Hi Pete, Stanwell Park is the best beach in that area to fish for jewfish by a county mile. Most of the other beaches are all versions of Austimeer and don't have enough depth until the tide bottoms out meaning the tide would be ok in general but the wrong tide to target jewfish......... At Stanwell Park, there is good depth along the cliff faces at the northern end where you will see hang gliders on the weekend.......Those particular National Park cliffs speak for the water depth below and the volume of the water that overlaps around into the beach........... Stanwell Park has always had a big reputation for its big beach mulloway, being better than Wanda which is the best jewfish beach to the north of the mouth of the Hacking, whereas Stanwell Park is the most suitable beach of the two for the big cliff mulloway to come into... they gather in the jewfish holes along the deepwater rock faces along the high, inaccessible national park cliff faces. Whatever bait is running would be the bait of the day and the bait would more than likely be tailor, so start before sundown and fish for tailor and have a variety of other bait with you and keep your clusters of beachworms handy for the top changeover period only and including out of area bait like arrow squid if you are able to buy arrows that is. Although it's easy to get to and far from secluded, it's a quiet little beach below Helensburg tucked away south of Ottford and is only a forty minute drive from my place which is just outside of Campbelltown............... Drive right down to the life saver's club which is at the bottom of Beach road just off the scenic coast road north of Coalcliff and Stanwell park is best accessed by going down Bulli Pass or if you use the Princess Highway you can go down the top of the scenic drive which is just past Helensburg. Stanwell Park beach Is probably nature's best kept secret that has good jewfish water, good rips and plenty of room to fish. Hope this helps Peter. Cheers jewgaffer

Cheers jewgaffer thanks for the info byron, I have fished stanwell park once a long time ago but we didnt do any good - of course that dosent mean the spot is no good, we probably didnt fish the correct moon phase or tide etc and I can remember turning up with frozen pillies for bait, I have learned a lot since then! going by what you say the best area would be at the end of the beach near the cliff face, is that correct? high tide? or low tide? As for beach worms are they better fished at the turn of tide and slab baits during the run up or run out? I am thinking around the lead up to next full moon would be the best time. what are your thoughts. thanks pete.

Hi Pete When I go fishing for jewfish I forget about moon phases..... when prawns are running is one time when the moon does matter I would say......prawns moving in mass does provide easy pickings for fish like jewfish unless off course the prawn population moves thru incompatable water during new moon times and certain predators only have an opportunity to pick up the prawns that move away from the swarm........Certain moon phases might encourage more baitfish activity than others, still less moonlight and more cloud cover can top off a chosen night based on the right conditions and tide times ..... when there is nothing much else moving out of the beach area jewfish have moved into during the run down from the top of the tide, your own live baits or dead baits will stand out as easy pickings. Due to life saving exercises, rescue boat training, and summer activity, the Stanwell Park surf club will have a nice gully in front of it and in your case a Sunday night should fish well after the weekend activity has settled down. Like other beaches an hour or so before the top of the tide and having the chance to fish the whole of the run out tide works best overall and I would only include clusters of beachworms for alternative jewfish bait and use them only when the general bite goes off and stick to the beach. Cheers jewgaffer
