G'day mate,

It can be hard to find, but I use Shimano Ace-2 drag grease for my wet drags... it's superb.

They also have a dry drag system lubricant called TBM-0 Unilight that I use on carbontex washers etc... with dry drag systems though you don't soak the washers with lubricant... just put the lightest coating on and wipe it off again... it should be so thin a coating that you cant really see it but if you touch the washer, you'll leave a fingerprint in the residue.

Unilight is a great drag grease. Up there with the best for carbon washers.

On felt i use a very light machine oil made for lubricating pneumatic tools. I've used many different light oils on felt washers and never noticed a difference. I've also used grease, but it the grease tends not to soak in to the felt.

Just don't overdo it. I usually massage the oil into the felt, then dry them as much as i can with a clean rag by squeezing the washer in the rag. This removes the excess.

G'day Arman,

I clean my reels and give them a spray with Lanox every time I go out. I lubricate the obvious working parts every 2 or 3 trips (oil ports, handle, etc).

As far as a full strip down I only do this once a year or sometimes after a period of hard fishing (like after an extended trip, the end of the season etc). When I do a strip down I clean and relube everything... with wet drags I clean out the old drag grease in white spirits and re-lube them with Ace 2. With carbontex & similar though, I only ever just give them a wipe over with a clean dry cloth and then reapply a new smear of Unilight.

I'm dedicated to it for a couple of reasons... one is preventative maintainence - I have no idea how much is too much really but I also know my reels perform faultlessly so I'll keep doing it... the other to be honest is because I just love tinkering.

There are 2 reels I own that I wouldn't service myself... a Fireblood and a Stella. They're just too damn complicated. I haven't had a reason to try my Okuma V-Systems... their twin drag systems look a lot simpler than Shimano's so I haven't decided whether to try it or not.

The only other time the factories see my reels is on the rare occasion a bearing needs replacing or something.

Cheers, Slinky
