tentonner Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Got out for a fish on Sunday morning and on our way out to the heads spotted a spare buoy in Bantry Bay. Figuring we may as well give it a quick go, we moored and started burleying and sent frozen squid and prawns over. Sat for about an hour and got one 40cm flathead that was a surprise as i'd never caught a lizard in Bantry before. Was just telling my mates about my theory that the rats have moved out of Bantry for the summer when wammo my Rack raider loaded with 10lb fireline buckles over and after a good fight a 60cm rat is boated. Caught another two similar size rats in the next half hour and lost one which i suspect wrapped it self around the public buoy we were moored on. Fished around the quarantine marker and North Head for a couple hours for zilch and decided to head home Then had another first as I was coming home. My rack raider loaded with 10lb fireline on a baitrunner was in a rodholder where it usually is. I was going along at a normal pace when suddenly my mate yells out and i turn around and see that about 120m of fireline had run out the back of the boat as the freespool button had been clicked and the weight from the sinker had sent all my line down to the depths - ruing the fact i must have tied a very weak knot around the spool before winding the line on. Anyways not a bad day by my standards on the water and a couple of firsts for me
slinkymalinky Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 G'day tentonner, A bit of a mixed day mate. I think we've all done something like that... I bet you don't do it again though Funny about Flatties in Bantry Bay. I never caught one in there either despite peppering the great looking drop-offs and the bay proper with plastic on several occasions... there are always heaps of poddy mullet up on the flats at the back of the bay so you'd think it would be crawling with hungry lizards?? Glad you had a nice day out. Cheers, Slinky
Steve07 Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Those little rats are great fun on light spin gear, but will still test you to the limit when it comes to your tackle & knots, plus the ability to wrap you around the nearest structure with ease. Always nice to get a few hookups, well done! Steve
