Hey all ,

Just wondering if anyone had any stories/pics of kingfish being caught on handlines ?

Currently waiting for my new combo and just couldn't wait enough - purchased 2 reels with 80lb mono on each, sending both down (on springers) with livies - i hope i catch as i've been getting smoked on light gear lately.

Any inspirational stories would be greatly appreciated.

Personal thanks to dogtooth who has been a great source of inspiraiton

Don't worry about the gloves with the kings that are around at the moment.

Give it a go you will be suprised, they fight a lot differently on hand line. It is pretty boring actually.

Tuna on the other hand! You will need gloves for :D

While you're waiting for your new combo, you could have plenty of fun on kingfish by slow trolling live squid on a couple of those 80lb handlines attached to your springers..... No doubt John (Dogtooth) has passed on some good advice to you on keeping kingfish up and out of structure by continuing to slow troll on hook up to make the fish rise and follow along and surface....... The line slit at the top of the springers has sharp edges on it and it is a good idea to dampen the edges with fine tape or carefully round the edges off with a stanley knife........ after you put the line into the slit, tie a couple of half hitches into the slit back and around it and to secure the half hitches, just use an elastic band.............

Springers are a great asset to have on a boat but they are hard to come by. I got hold of the source where I bought my springers a good few years ago in Qld, for Vince (Var1991) who has springer mounts on the Haines Hunter centre console he recently got hold of........ The chap lives in Cunnamulla in Qld and informed me on Saturday that he has 60 pairs in stock at the moment,....... so if you need a couple more Archie or should anyone else need springers for their boat just let me know and I'll give you his contact details.........

Cheers

Funny you ask I have one friend who is THE WORST fisherman you've ever seen but according to him he's caught every fish in the sea, using every technique, every bait, all gear, all locations... plenty of massive kingfish.. yft, shark etc etc

So we went fishing at a kingy spot a few wks ago - first time i'd fished for decent fish with him. Don't even ask about the squiding lets just say it wasn't cheap and another bloke has 8 beautiful prong holes in the back of his neck.

anyway, I knew he'd never caught a king.. as luck would have it his line goes off first. my god it was hilarious as 2 of us watched him trying to skull drag it up, panicking on 50buck jarvis walker junk with no rod mvt. No tips were offered. he got busted. Prop about 50cm king. Next day he gets spooled thrice on reels worth i'd say $30 with about 4lb ten yr old line maybe 50m of line and about a kilo of drag. You should see the MONSTERS he nearly caught!!!

Next day he brings a handline as he's buggered all his reels. This fish pulled hard so I go for the gloves but he declines them. I put 1 on anyway and offer to hold the line while he puts a glove on but no, can't do that! Maybe i'm a %%%%%, but I took alot of joy in watching him cut his hands! With the gloves on he did get this fish up and it was a good fish, 88cm.

But personally id have to say catching kings on handlines isn't much fun. Unless you just want to eat em. But make sure you have gloves!

Hi Archilles2, I use springers all the time with livies, I use small inner tubes off mountain bikes for my fingers mainly two on each hand. I get all my springers from ch smith marine victoria, they even cut them

to length. hand lining is great fun especially jewies in shallow water around bommies.

Cheers rick.

I swear it looked at us, with a look on it's face as if to say you moron you have no chance check this shit out.. Bang! Biggest i've seen, so there are def some decent size kings coming in on occasion
