After reading all the good reports on this forum regarding the sx40's and Roberta's post regarding colours, I went down to my local and purchased about 10. Personally I find them too small?? Just not used to using such tiny lures. Tried the sx48 and it feels about right.

Am I missing something??

Rob

Use ultra lite tackle and you will see the results and work them slowly with pauses.

G'Day Stewy,

I sold my other bits and pieces and settled on using one setup. It is a g-loomis dropshot 2-4kg ultra fast 6'10" with a daiwa luvias 2000 using td sensor 8lb braid. Rated at 1/8 - 3/8oz lure weight.

Had a "play" out the back yard and was casting a sx40 around and could only get it to travel maybe 5m.......

Just weighed the sx40 on the wife's electronic scales = 0.10 oz and the sx48 = 0.15 oz.

Regards,

Rob

P.S. Thanks for the great site, appreciate you allowing us all to share this great hobby of ours.

8lb braid is way to heavy for these small lures and a 1 to 3 kg is the maximum rod you would use.

Drop down to 4 lb braid and a 3 kg leader and only use a short length of leader around 3 foot.

You will get about 20 mtres with that.

Stewy,

Now I am in trouble, told the missus that I only needed one rod and reel so I could by my loomis.

Was hoping the ultra fast 2-4kg rod would still be able to flick the light lures.

I did have a 2m leader which I trimmed to 0.5m which made a difference. I got a second spool for the reel and was thinking of putting 4lb or 6lb braid on it.

The only other rod I have is a daiwa pro caster V ultra light nibble tip 1-4kg .............. very fine for trout maybe that would be the go????

Rob

Here is my new setup:

Have not problem casting out with even 12lb mono but if you hav a heavy leader or big swivel then it wont go far also use the wind

Darkhorse, I have the Same rod for Bream and I can cast SX40 miles away with 6lb Sunline PE. I also have a bigger reel, SOL2500.

I find the rod perfect for small lures.

EDIT: I also use a Half rod 4lb Sunline Rock leader. 8Lb in structure.

i've got the same rod matched with a team daiwa 2500xi. i've not used the sx40s but have used kokoda wee whops and the like for bass which are quite small and light with 6lb braid, quite accurate to 15-20m, no problem at all. love the setup, lovely rod while the reel is getting older the larger spool can't be beaten for distance.

That's a lovely setup you got there darkhorse.

I'd recommend spooling the spare spool with 4lb crystal fireline. I've got 6lb spooled on my stradic 2500 with a 2-4 kg pflueger trion and can get around 20 m with an SX40 so should have no problems getting that distance with the 4lb. Fireline's breaking strain is under-rated so 4lb is about 8lb breaking strain.

Or as suggested before, 6lb Sunline PE is a good braid, just a bit pricier, though.

The 8lb spool could be used for heavier SPs or big HBs for jewies or flatties or rat kings.

Cheers.

sx40's require fine braid<0.1mm and good casting technique

i don't realy use them for distance work (flats)

for distance work use camions they cast heeps better

sx40's are very good lures for snags

Once again thanks for the replies. As I mentioned I got a spare spool with the Luvias. Yesterday I purchased some Sunline Super PE 6lb, very thin braid (#0.6)and matched it up with 6lb Berkley Vanish leader.

Tied on the same SX40 and had a go casting again the back yard. Went alot further.

I then put the reel on my 1-3kg Samurai (early Gary Howard) and had a few more casts. Got the same distance as with the Loomis 2-4kg. From what I have read the loomis dropshot 2-4kg is ultra fast, so quite "whippy" at the tip but strong and powerful in the but.........

So I have 1 spool with 8lb TD Sensor and 1 spool with 6lb Sunline PE, it should cover most conditions.

Rob

The Loomis is a top rod and more than happy with mine, I have loaded it up with 50+cm Bass and it has the power! and also great for Super light 2lb strait through Fluro bream fishing as well.

Your pick of braid is also great! once you have used that spool of 6lb Sunline PE, try stepping up to Sunline castaway.

i've had a 2.5kg+ rainbow on the end of my loomis 820s, i don't think there is a trout out there i wouldn't be confident tackling with my rod. whether i could bring it though is a completely different story!

Rob, there is nothing wrong with your combo, the 6 lb will be a little bit better for casting distance. The problem is the weight of the lure, ecogear sx 40's weigh only 2 grams. Most of the other jap brands of hardbodies weigh in at around 3.5grams so you can cast them like a bullet. So the fix is easy, you dont need to spend hundreds of dollars on a new rod/reel combo, just buy different brands of hardbodies that are heavier.

Paul
