fishmaniac Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 (edited) Went out today with the girlfriend after having a crack in my boat repaired last weekend. Usual Sydney Harbour deal of late for us was maintained today.... - Salmon - Few kingies - More legal bream that you can poke a stick at - Big trevally The lady on board was very pleased after christening her new rod with a nice king that was released for another day. No sign of mr. shark today. It was a nice day as there were not to many boats (gotta love the overcast weather). Heading out wide tommorrow for dolphin fish (mahi mahi). I noticed the water has bumped up to 24 at the waverider bouy and satellite imagery conforms a good body of nice warm water. Has anyone heard of any valid reports of dolphin fish or got amonsgt them recently? A heads up tonight would be great. Cheers, Andrew Edited February 22, 2009 by fishmaniac
mikeh191 Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Hi Andrew, I ventured out today from port hacking with 3 mates. Got some yakkas and first stop was botany east fad but nothing there ,nexted stop was the peak for some kings but not even a show on the sounder so didnt even try. So off to botany wide fad where we got 2 dollies up to 70cm and a lot of throw backs [under 60cm].Then thought we would try the 12 mile but again no show on the sounder so didnt even drop a livie. Nexted stop was port hacking fad where we found the dollies on the chew but only managed 2 more legals and plenty under size dollies, the water temperture was 23.8 to 24.2 degrees. Hope that helps and good luck tomorrow. Cheers Mike

fishmaniac Posted February 22, 2009 Author Posted February 22, 2009 Mike, Thanks for the heads up. I had read ur reply before going to bed. Cheers mate We headed out today and found some traps. Water was greeny and so i was not feeling very confident. 22.5 degrees. Had a shot anyways and managed my first mahi mahi. Nothing spectacular really, but still a first. It was then followed by second, third etc until they went off the bite at about 10-11. By this stage i had 13, which i thought was a good effort considering it was a first time for me and the birds were wreaking havok on our baits . A couple were of legal size and they sure do look spectacular and fight well on 8lb spin gear. We ventured wider and found 23.5 degree water that was a lovely blue colour. Found a trap and this one had no fish at all! I also got a PB kingie, smallest that is, at about 20cm We then ventured to long reef to try berlying up for snapper. So much for that idea.. Got overrun by bloody sweep. Millions of them around 30-40cm. Couldn't even get a bait more than 2m from the surface. Absolutely ridiculous. So called it a day, and happy with my first dollies. Will post pics later when i get them off the phone. Basil, My boat is aluminium. The weld had failed and the aluminium sheet that makes up the hull fractured at this point... Fish were caught at various locations around the harbour, mainly following the surface action Andrew

Great effort for your first time, they are great eating fresh. We went out again today off cronulla and found the water temperature had gone up to 25.4 degrees and also found 3 fish traps with dollies under 1 of them. We caught quiet a few but only 3 legals still all in all a good day. Cheers Mike
Dorado 2 Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Hi guys I also went out today off Port kembla, but while we did get amongst some dollies the water temp did not even get close to what you guys experienced the highest mine registered was 20.6 and the water looked the part as it did not look too blue at all. The dollies were all undersize all caught on plastics as we could not throw a pilchard, mutton birds in plague proportions. Cheers
