Jacks Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Hey guys and girls I want to start using lures and things for catching bream and whiting and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on rods and reels that work good together in a combo for this purpose, $300 is about my limit. Also anyone care to tell me some base lures i could buy as some starters? Thanks in advance Your very keen fishing friend Jacks
Davemmm Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 $300 is about my limit Jacks the problem is that once you start there is NO limit to what you end up spending. You will pull up at tackle shops with a plan to just go in and get a box of 2/0 suicide hooks and come out with two packs of soft plastics, a squid jig, three ecogear sx's, a couple of chubby's and a cheap pink thing you threw in the basket just for the hell of it. When you get out to the car you will realise you still need the hooks but you won't be game to go back in case it costs you another fity dollars. Anyhow If you intend to use Soft Plastics there are some pretty good graphite rods around now for around $60-$80. They are as good or better than the dedicated SP 'rods that cost $300 a couple of years ago. Get one from 6-7 foot and match it with a 1000 - 2500 size reel. The cost of this will depend on you. Personally I would get a reasonable graphite rod with a good reel. You should be able to get something like a Shimano Stradic 1000 for around $250. Your budget gets blown out a bit when you then start to put line on it, add leaders and then lures/Sp's so maybe a reel in the Symetre price range is better suited (about $110). DAVE
Jacks Posted February 22, 2009 Author Posted February 22, 2009 That's the exact reel i would like but can't seem to find one under $170 anywhere. I was thinking $300 just for the rod and reel, i've already got plenty of SP's and a couple of stiffy poppers, but will no doubt buy more next time i go to a tackle store. I mean i pretty much already spend my pay each week at different tackle store around, hence why i don't mind going out and buying a rod specifically for lure work. Thanks Jacks
jewgaffer Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Hi Jacks I agree with Davemmm. The best idea with lures is to only buy 5 of the best proven performers for the particular species in a few different colours and simply don't buy anything else..... When you have done that you'll feel confident knowing that you only have good performers in your tackle box..... From that point keep step with new technology by reading what our top lure fishermen have to say in forum when discussing the merits of new arrivals, particularly lures which are actually working better for them as shown in their fishing reports. Rather than just chosing lures myself and under or overdoing it or listening to too many other people, I did not hesitate to ask other Fishraiders for advice, sum it up and then just go out and buy confidently. Here is a link to my inquiry about the latest and best flathead lures as an example. http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.ph...c=34873&hl= Hope this helps and I am sure you'll receive the best advice possible for your bream and whiting lures from our bream and whiting specialists. slinkymalinky Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 A great value rod to consider would be a Berkley Drop Shot... Until I upgraded my favourite sp rod was a Drop Shot 2-4kg, 7'2" that I got for around $100. This was originally mated to a Shimano Symetre 1000... you should be able to pick them both up in your budget with room for some braid. I absolutely love Stradics and more recently some of the Daiwa reels like TD Sols but to be honest, as a first luring outfit there is no need to spend that much money to get a great reel. I'd certainly advise against getting a 'cheapie' but if you speak to Pete at Go Fish he'd have you set up with a great outfit for that money with a few lures, line and the lot, that would catch you a heap of fish. Cheers, Slinky

Cheers jewgaffer Thanks alot for your reply I am currently building up my supply of sp's and hb lures but now need an outfit that is purposely put together for this reason. I currently have two lightweight rods and two small (2500 approx) reels. It looks like i will get myself a shimano symetre 1000 reel but would love to know what match it to for best results. Jacks Also if anybody knows anywhere around panania/east hills to practice with sp's and hb's i'd be very greatful. Or even better if someone would be willing to put there hand up to teach me a few things would be fantastic. It's a very tall ask, but if you don't ask you'll never know.
