dinnerbell Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Gday All. This is my first post. I towed my boat down to Crook Haven on saturday and headed out to the banks with a mate from mollymook. As soon as we hit the banks we could see bait for miles. We threw a few lures on 3 kilo gear and we were getting smashed by massive slimeys. We upped the gear a bit and put a few in the tank. We put two livies out one deep and one on the surface. The one deep went off within 5 minutes. Half an hour later we had a 7 foot long bronze whaler at the boat and it bit through the trace. We set the livies out again and 10 minutes later we had a big blue marlin on. One and a half hours later we had it to the boat and it snapped my rod when we were just about to grab the leader. Then the next ten minutes were spent trying to lift this marlin up by hand. It was sitting under the boat on its side and was too heavy to lift on the already damaged 24 kilo line. All of a sudden the line snapped. I just hope the fish survived and was able to swim away. Then we put two more livies out and within 5 minutes my mate hooked up to a 76cm kingfish. Then we hooked a few more undersized kings that were swallowing 40cm slimies. Great day on the water except for the broken rod. That is number 8 marlin i have lost. I am bound to land one sooner or later.
slinkymalinky Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Great first post dinnerbell. Shame about the rod and the lost marlin... you're way ahead of me though... I've only ever hooked 1 and then lost it after only about 30 seconds. Sounds like awesome fun on the water. Like they say, find the bait and you find the fish. Good luck on your next marlin. Cheers, Slinky

Cheers, Slinky Gday Slinkymalinky Thanks for the reply. I know what you feel like as i have lost a few but have had fun trying to land one. I started out hooking up and being snapped off in seconds. Then i learned how to set the drag properly. But now i have lost a few due to tackle failure and also propellors at the boat. It is frustrating but also very exciting. Cheers Dinnerbell
michaelrdoyle@gmail.com Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Sounds like you had a great day! And sounds like the Banks are firing again - tell me, was the current running from the North or South? And what was the water temp? I was down there all Jan - but it was very sucky out there - fishing wise! Mike

The wind was from the south but i am not too sure about the current as my boat with the wind is like having a big sail up. Thanks Adam.
