james7 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I’m looking for a “cheap” general purpose reel to be used as a spare setup, or by mates with no gear of their own. It would mainly be used for bottom bashing in depths up to about 100m, or occasionally for small kings or dolphin fish. I was planning to put some 20-30lb braid on it. I’ve been through quite a few old posts and a few people seem to recommend the Shimano Baitrunner 6500 or the Spheros 14000, but both are out of my price range as I only wanted to spend about $80 - $120 on the reel or about $140 - $160 for a rod/reel combo. It seems that a Penn Spinfisher 750, 850 or 950 might be suitable. However, I don’t know much about them. Any suggestions, comments or alternatives appreciated. Cheers Peter
slinkymalinky Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Penn Spinfisher's are a good, robust reel so a good option. Give Pete a call at Go Fish... he'll steer you in the right direction. Cheers, Slinky
jewgaffer Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Hi PeterS. Penn Captiva is all the rage up north along with the new ss range and both are well discounted if you look around and then check with Go Fish Pete who can get one to you by courier for about $10.00. They have Penn's quality control and both these Penns are serious reels and top value for money. Cheers jewgaffer
