Traps or witches hats are not allowed up there. George doesn't know enough to post so send him an email, and he'll either email you back or pass on to me some land based spots where you can get access to . Cheers jewgaffer
Dreamtime Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 You could possibly look around any area vegetated with mangroves and set a trap or two when the tide is out. Check them back again on the next low tide. Cheers
Davemmm Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 If you can find an area that hold crabs regularly and is accessible there are ways and means of getting them. Dougy's flats near St George Sailing club is a good example. You can wade out to the edge of the drop off and then simply cast out a large slab bait that has been wrapped up with either torn up panty hose, a section of old net or a big tangle of line with loops hanging off it everywhere. Then after a while just slowly retrieve. It helps if your slab bait is a nice fresh blood fish fillet such as mullet this will leave a good burley trail. The other way is to very quietly walk the sand flats with a dip net at night. Years ago we where quite succesful off Bonner point at Kurnell and one night managed a couple of big sand crabs as well as blueys. I think the sand crabs are much tastier than blue swimmers but you have to get decent size ones. Dave
tide'n'knots Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I once caught 7 blue swimmers in patonga creek. just wade out into the creek about chest deep, drop in a couple of wiches hats then go back every hour or so to check. When i caught mine we were camping in the camping ground and I wasnt really looking after them just chucked them out and went back some time later and pulled them in - 7 crabs in one go! Good luck. Pete.
