Sharky
Hi Raiders I had a car accident in the rain about a week ago and I have smashed up my mitsubishi magna The car is fixable however I would like to just sell it and buy a new one. The car has front end damage and the airbag went of. Im not sure the best way to go about selling it??? Do I sell it to a wrekers? Sell it on ebay? carpoint? or advertise it in the weekend classifieds???? Im not sure how much it would be worth or even how much to advertise it for? It is a 1999 modle with 170000 km on it and was in perfect working condition before the accident. Two new front tires and kept neat and tidy. Any advice from any raiders in the know would be much appreciated. I will be taking some pics of it this arvo. Any advice would be much appreciated as the quicker I take care of this problem the quicker I can go fishing again.
Guest
Sharky, with that many KLMS on it and its age ,it is not worth much at all mate. The wreckers will give you nothing for it and probably neither will anyone else I hope you are ok after your accident mate ?? Cheers Stewy
Dreamtime
It might pay you to check with the Department of Transport as to the requirements you need to meet if selling. One would think that you would have to hand back in the plates and sell it as an unregistered wreck. Otherwise you would need a pink slip for the sale. Hope nobody was injured. THe best way would be just to put it in the paper as is, make sure you mension in the ad about the front end damage. Is it a 4 cyl or a V6? I got to disagree with Stewy here (sorry mate) but 170K's actually below average K's. Average is 20K's yr, so at 10yr old average would be 200K's, and 10 yr old isn't that old if it's been looked after, especially with below average K's. With the all that in mind, if it's in good nick apart from the stack you had, you might be lucky and find a panel beater or someone good with cars looking for a cheap car he can fix up. Have a look at the red book online, not sure of the web adress, just google it, that will tell you exactly what it was worth in good condition and you can go from there taking into account the damage from the accident. I don't think there's any issues with the RTA selling it as it is. Good luck. Edited February 26, 2009 by LittleNoah
BalmainBob
Gday Mate. I would stick it on Ebay with a few photos showing the damage and a brief description with a starting price of $500 and no reserve. You may find that someone is looking for a wreck for the parts. There is very little value in 10 year old cars now let alone damaged ones. I have sold a couple of damaged cars that way on Ebay before. hottyscotty
is the car still driveable? if it is i would just whack it on ebay, some repairer will buy it and re-sell after repairs. or they strip it for parts if like me, doing some silly stunts, which completely destroyed the suspension and probably drive shafts etc. look up your local paper and there are people who will buy scrap cars for cash. i got $400 for my wreck. pelican
Don't forget to get your refund on insurances etc , not sure if they refund half rego if you hand plates in? Someone will buy it to strip it privately but I know the scrap dealers have stopped buying for metal value alone which was who was buying all the car bodies for $400. Just phone RTA as Mariners says and see if there is any restriction on putting it on ebay but set a time limit to pay and collect otherwise you'll get messed around. If it has has the outo replaced etc place that in the add as it doesn't take too many good items to add up to a few $ for a buyer with a car that needs parts. dani!o
hey mate... first of all, sorry to hear about your accident. I am a car enthusiast, so let me see if I can give you some constructive input First, the air bags went off - this makes quite a big difference, because the modules, sensors and air bags need to be replaced. This is about 800 to 1000. So, I dont think its worthwhile trying to fix it, and more importantly, i think the chances someone will buy it to try and fix themselves is slim. To give you an example - for an insurance claim, a crash that sets off the air bags is much more likely to be written off. Otherwise, the car will be repaired Second, you can either get rid of it quickly, or try and get some money but it will take time. If you want to get rid of it quickly, can I recommend you do this: - remove tail lights, indicator lights, etc - this is easy to remove and easy to sell - remove rims and tyres - these will definitely selll... everyone needs tyres - If you feel the need, remove the seats. I dont think these will sell, but if you have kids who play playstation or something a car seat can be a nice addition to the den Rest of it straight to the scrap yard... you wont get much for it... if you sell the tail lights, rims and tyres (depending on what you have of course), you can get maybe 500 to 800 (500 for 4 rims with tyres, 300 for rear lights with indicators). If youre wondering why i havent said anything about selling the engine off, its because - 170kkm might be below average or what not, but in terms of the life of the engine it's probably more than halfway. If I was to transplant an engine into my car, i wouldnt use a 170kkm engine. Moreover, magnas are pretty common, i dont really know who will buy an engine for transplant.... well, there is a possibility that a mechanic might be looking for an engine to fix an insurance claim car, but this is unlikely because if the engine was damaged it'll probably be written off... If you dont mind spending some time, tear the car apart - the rear panels, windows, steering wheel, they are all worth money. rear bumper too. You can either separate it yourself, and advertise the parts, or you can leave the car as is in your garage, advertise online, and people will come along and take bits off... you will probably get 1500 to 1800 all up for this, but its a bit of a bother because the car will be just sitting there, and at the end you still need to have it towed to the scrap yard... If you're wondering where to sell it, the answer is car forums... just like this... or, you can spend 30 bucks and put on carsales, but i dunno if thats worth it. There are also classified sides like cracker and gumtree. Last thing is mate dont worry about how much the car is worth... itll probably be a bit more than redbook... redbook used to be used by insurance companies to value cars. But, it's a bit of a joke now because if you could buy a car at redbook prices, you'd be getting the deal of the century. Try and sell of the parts - if you need the money, things like the gearbox, steering wheel, windshield, thats all worth money, but i estimate itll take 2 months minimum before you can dispose of most of the parts... by the way there are no requirements for selling... it's only for driving. So if you sell the car without rego, it either needs trade plates or needs to be towed... Ah yes - dont forget to get that rego back. If you de register your car, you get your rego money back. Same with insurance including green slip. Most important thing is you are safe. Trust me, it doesnt feel this way but it is true, but only visible in 20/20 hindsight. I've smashed 2 cars before, and neither time i got hurt. which is the best of a bad thing right? Good luck mate.
