james7
It was my first trip out for a while. A spectacular sunrise made the early start (well, early for me) worthwhile. There was plenty of action the first hour, but no keepers. Yakkas, slimmies, chopper tailor, baby snapper and small flathead were everywhere. Conditions were great and I was loving just being on the water. I finally managed a couple of nice flatties and a few tailor. I got a bit excited when one reel started screaming. However, it was a little gummy shark that eventually came to the surface. I decided to let him go as I already had a feed on board. It certainly put up a good fight. I also saw three small sharks on the surface throughout the day. Two looked like bronze whalers by their colour and the third grey fin appeared to be a little hammerhead. All swam within 20m of the boat. The amount of yakkas and slimmies around was amazing. That’s probably why a few pro boats were working the area. I kept some to be salted for bait next time. Some of the yakkas were quite big. A few were over the 35cm mark. Ended up catching three shovel nose rays. The bigger ones are quite a workout on light gear. Why do they always choose the light rigs? I also hooked up to something “very big”. Whatever it was, it dragged the boat around and controlled all the action. I couldn’t gain an inch. Unfortunately it broke off after a few minutes. I would have liked to have had a peek at it, to have seen how big it was, and what it was. It made the gummy shark feel like a poddy mullet by comparison. It’s good to have at least one “the one that got away” story. Dinner last night Well, I had a great day, scored a feed, and was more than happy to be fishing again. ... and here's a couple of more sunrise shots to bore you. Cheers Peter Edited March 2, 2009 by peterS

Hodgey
Well done on an entertaining day on the water Peter. Those sunrise shots are fantastic! Great closeup of the little 'noah'. By all accounts you had a great diversity of fish to play with today, and with the sunrise as a back drop ... I wonder what the 'poor people' were doing? Cheers Hodgey

zen801
Hi Peter, Looks like a top day on the water and some action to boot as well. Mate those Gummy sharks are very good eating. The big fish you lost was a bummer but when that happens to me i consider it a test of my gear. Gives you an opportunity to see at what point in your rig was the weakest link. Then improve. Cheers. james7
Nice, where were you? Hi Joel. It was Bate Bay. I spent most of the day drifting between Cronulla and Wanda. Mate those Gummy sharks are very good eating. The big fish you lost was a bummer but when that happens to me i consider it a test of my gear. Gives you an opportunity to see at what point in your rig was the weakest link. Then improve. Zenman and A.dawg, I've heard those gummy sharks are good eating, but didn't really want to take more than I need. Next time I'll give it a go for sure. Mike, you're right about the weakest point in the rig. It was the line than broke (20lb mono), not the leader. I think there was a weak point in it. During the fight the line did go under the boat and it may have touched it. The line is a bit old too, so I'm going to replace it. Well done on an entertaining day on the water Peter. Those sunrise shots are fantastic! Glad you like 'em Hodgey. I only took about 30 shots! I can't catch big flatties like you and Zenman, but I can catch a sunrise!
