roosterman Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 (edited) hi guys, been abit slack with reports of late and the kid getting hit by a shark at avalon reminded me to post... well friday night i went to newport beach right on sunset with a fresh big pike some frozen squid(self caught) and yakkas.. the carpark had a couple groups of fishoes getting ready but i was able to get into what i thought was a good spot for my 2 rods...just on dark the firs squid bait gets pelted out(well lobed for some as it was only about 40mtrs) walk back to my gear then over to setup 2nd rod about 20mtrs away... then zzzzzz my 650 with 20lb mono sings that sweet sound,i rush over and pick rod up lower tip and as the slack tightens i sink the hook deep.... rod starts to load up then ping... sharked... i was already half way through my other setup so went and continued with that and pelted out a big butterflied pike... over to my 1st rod and then just as im nearly finished my 651 alvey loaded with 30lb mono zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.. i race over as this is a much better run, lower tip slack tightens then drive the hook deep.. hook stuck rod loads up big time and i know im on to something serious... there is heaps of guys all along the beach by now so i start to give this thing some real stick and there is plenty of weight and the custom 7144 is really loaded up,and palm getting some chinese burns... after about 3-4 min or so im near the next fisho about 50-60 metres down beach and im thinking cannot be shark as he hasn't bit me off.. snaaaaaap.... ... now this was brand new low streatch platapus just spooled a week ago and it was a clean cutoff above swivels...... now id like to think it was a jew but most prob was a big noah.. as for the clean cut after soooo long ??? buggered if i know, anyone else had issues with platapus 15kg low streatch before... i was really putting heaps preassure so may have exceeded line strength but i think maybe tail hit line under preassure or there was alot of weed/kelp.... stayed till the turn of tide then left at midnight.... tally for the night 2 bustoffs within minutes of arriving then catching about half dozen weed fish(kelp),pb was easily 4-5kg and pulled drag in the current/swell ... was an awesome night weather wise but the weed was horrible.... knew i should of went plan "b"like the other night and get a feed of bream that are in the shallows feeding on all this natural burly.got 9 the other night.. dont think any other guys got anything... was any raiders there friday night,i was fishing out front of surf club... anyway was great to get out and i will prob check weed tomorrow for another bash somewhere local... cheers...steve..... smoked1 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Narrabeen fishes much better for Jew. All I have seen/heard over the many years at Newport is sharks and Rays!! I think we all wish we had gone with plan B at some stage. Better luck next time, I might see you down at Narrabeen. I'll know you are the guy that fishes the 2 rods

I think we all wish we had gone with plan B at some stage. Better luck next time, I might see you down at Narrabeen. I'll know you are the guy that fishes the 2 rods narrabeen is like pitt st and due to the late start would not have got a spot for 1 rod i think... most of the beaches fire and you would be surprised at how good others are and yeh ive got a few big bronzies over the yrs at newport but its not my preferred spot..spot x was weeded out bigtime 10x more than newport.. narrabeen has the big name but also gets crowded.. in saying that the structure of that headland/reef coming onto the out of the lagoon is def big fish territory... where i got my pb big jew many yrs ago... because of the dark moon the bream were in shallows feeding (not newport but spot x) love it when a plan works out as it doesnt always pan out as good as that night did.. im not big on bream fishing these days but really needed a feed as freezer was bare... are you a local to nth beaches smoked ?? thx for the reply.. cheers...steve....

smoked1 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Hey Steve. No not a lcoal but might as well be one considering all the trips I have put in. I think I may know spot X you are referring to. I was checking out the weed factor on friday. Looks fishy and definately less crowd. Sometimes I dont mind the crowd on a long beach. How big is the PB steve?
Jewhunter Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Narrabeen fishes much better for Jew. Don't bet on it! Cheers, Grant.
Rhino2099 Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Hey steve I had a similar experience last weekend at narra when my baitrunner started peeling line off (bait runner drag not fighting drag) and went limp and thought what ever it was had spat the hooks to find my main line was cut somewhere above the swivel. My only explanation was the leader was tangled up and over the sinker and main line and when the probably shark took the squid it had my main line in with it. The line was Platypus platinum 25lb. tide'n'knots Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Don't bet on it! Cheers, Grant. I fished narra on sat night with twin1 (marcel) for nought!!!
