Wantingaboat Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Dear all Raiders, I have just bought a new boat and wanted to bolt the outboard onto the transom myself and needed some advice. The boat is a Brooker 410 fisherman and it has a 40HP on the back. It is only secured at present by the clamps that are part of the engine but i am not to sure about the strength of these on a 40HP motor. I wanted to drill holes through the transom and bolt it on but was unsure of the height that it should be fixed on at and the difficulty of this task. All advice is very welcome. Thanks in advance. I am hoping to take it out this sunday for her maiden voyage. Mike.
harrold101 Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Gday mate I mounted my 50hp on to one of my boats without any problems just make sure you have the right height. If you have the motor manual it will show you where to measure from but if you don't, just clamp the motor to the boat as it would normally be.. and drill through the holes with a long drill piece that's a bit thicker then the bolts. to spread the weight of the motor i but down a sheet of stainless steel on the inside of the boat, which seems to be working. If your good with your hands you should be alright mate haha
a boat Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Hi, I would be taking it back to the selling dealer and getting him to do that. Did they not even water test it to make sure the height is right? Sounds like a classic case of plonk the outboard on and she will be right. It is not only dangerous to not have a 40HP bolted on, but you will not get the best out of the rig. Cheers, Huey.

However I bought the motor and the hull from seperate dealers as the price of the various units was right. I guess neither dealer wanted to help as they were probably irritated that i didnt get the entire package that either were offering. I looked around for quite a while and that was the best deal to get me on the water but i guess i got plonkers for dealers. I am pretty confident that i can install it as long as i can get the distance between the c.plate and the bottom of the hull. Anyone done this?
IWANNABROCK Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 The cav plate normally sits level or just below the lowest part of hull I think.
johnv Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 (edited) g-day i would take it to huey's for a proper fit up to make sure its done correct cheers john Edited March 8, 2009 by johnv
ORES Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Mate, just a word of warning with Brooker boats. They are a very good boat and been arround for a long time I had one and getting another one BUT when you mount the motor and drill through the transom you will find that the holes will go through the rectangular alloy suport bracing on the in side of the transom. As these are hollow make sure once you drill the hole and before you bolt it up squirt a hell of a lot of sikaflex in the hole (in the channel of the bracing) and on the washers so as to seal it properly. I got a new 90 fitted to my new transom by the dealer and if I didnt have a beilge pump i would have had a lot of water in it! I unbolted it and did this and it was fine, dry as. Just a hint for brooker owners.
