Hey Guys

Along with the Sensor Surf Rod I need a Overhead reel to be used to cast from the beach. Was looking at the Saltist Levelwind but is there other reels that could the job better, looking for a reel with a level wind.

Any Ideas fellas.

Cheers

Hi guys. On this topic, has anyone tried the okuma solterra overheads? I saw them advertised in a fishing mag recently, and they looked interesting and versatile. I've been impressed with the "better" end of the okuma spinning reel range recently, and wondered if this overhead may be worth a look.

ABU 7000.

One of the easiest overhead casting reels that you'll find.

The drags get a bit lumpy when you screw them up but you can't beat them for the $$$$.

Cheers,

Grant.

The ABU7000's are sensational, and the Drags can be sorted for only a few bucks :biggrin2: Great value for money, and great casting reel. I own a 7000C3 which still see's regular use on sambo's, wouldn't sell it for quids.

My Calcutta i find superb, casts well, smooth drag, even when cranked up. needless to say I'm pleased with my purchace

As for the Saltist, They look the goods on paper but having never cast one or felt the drag i can't comment. I'm sure it would be Ideal.

Once again personal preference and budget :1prop:

You can order carbonex drag washers from Jack Erskine's in Cairns for the ABU. It's worth getting some Cal's drag grease from him as well. The standard drag washers will do for a while but will deteriorate with use. You can always upgrage the drag down the track.

As to the Saltist level wind I'm not too sure about it's casting qualities. A large model off the beach might be a bit of a handlful if the spool is a bit heavy (not saying it is but it's a possibility if the reel if more designed for boat fishing and jigging).

I have a Saltist 50 for boat use and it's a very solid reel. Strong drag, one piece frame and well ahead of the ABU in the durability stakes.
