riderzx10r05 Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Hi all, can anyone recommend a reputable dealer that can fit a second battery to my Stacer and wire in a paralleling isolator switch. It's the redundancy that I'm after for when I'm outside fishing or using a lot of auxilliaries at anchor! Thanks Raiders, Troy
glennmreid Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Ditto to the above post. huey fitted a 2nd battery to my boat, with a VSR which after the 1st battery is charged, automatically charges the 2nd battery. also fitted a 4 way switch so I can select battery 1,2 1 & 2 or off. Huey does great work.

I don't run a lot of electrics in my side console like larger boats do and did a bit of checking around and was advised to use a second good quality starter battery rather than having a deep cycle battery fitted for no other reason other than the cost of deep cycle battery I think and having better start up power by using a good starter battery instead. What are these VSR's that Huey fits Chopper, how good a charging job are they capable of with a two battery set up while you're out on the water and what do they cost approximately??, I have to lug a big charger out the day before every session and give both my batteries a slow trickle charge one at a time. Cheers jewgaffer

Cheers jewgaffer hi byron VSR..voltage sensitive relay they dont actually charge your batteries they/it directs the charge this is how mine is setup in my boat i have a start battery and a house battery that runs everything but the motor the charge from the motor goes to the start battery when the charge in the start battery has reached 12.8 volts(from memory) the relay(vsr)cuts in and then charges both batteries simultaneously they cost about $120 plus fitting so basically they just direct the charge coming from your motor while its running cheers arman

Does this unit give more charge than you get while I'm driving the boat with the battery switch in the "both" position and would I still need to top up my batteries with the charger before the next session or does the VSR do that and also show whether the voltage reading is suitable or not for each battery to save charging them up at home? Cheers mate Byron

Cheers mate Byron no worries mate does it give you more charge than driving the boat on both batteries,to cut it short no it doesnt but it does it better,i will try and explain it is sort of a set and forget thing,i just select the start battery and i know that il charge both batteries once and only when the start battery is fully charged the start battery being the important one as thats gona get you home, not so important in the river but 20 miles offshore ,you dont want to get the paddle out ,,lol the vsr is a cube shape thingy about 75mm,the only indication of charge level is when it has reached12.8 volts and then it has a tiny red light on it.The red light indicates its opened the relay to allow current to the house battery, this light stays on all the time ,till the voltage drops below 12.8 volts so there is no drain on the batteriesat that point hope this makes sense so byron if you dont do enough miles in the boat you wont charge your batteries enough and you will have to resort the old charger a mate of mine has a bass boat and he has a charger hard wired to the batteriesand a flush mounted power outlet,so when he gets home ,he gives the boat a tub and when he puts it away grabs an extension lead and plugs it in to the flush mounted fitting and the batteries are on charge easy way to do it no climbing in and out just a thought mate cheers arman it might be 13.6 volts not 12.8 not sure cheers arman

I have to get some electrical work done to install a deck wash pump and another live bait tank so I'll ask the how my charger can be connected into a flush mounted power outlet (it has leads on it with battery clips) so that I won't have to keep on lifting this heavy Italian made 12 / 24V charger up into my boat. Cheers Byron
riderzx10r05 Posted March 6, 2009 Author Posted March 6, 2009 Thanks Chopper. I thought the boys would be good for it down at Huett! Will probably get it done in August.

Hi Rider, Another option to double your battery that I haven't seen mentioned is available from BCF (I have no affiliation with them). It's a Battery Box by Ark Corporation (see www.arkcorporation.com). It comes with a built in isolator switch, recharger, (cigarette lighter) accessory plug built in to the box. The beauty of these is if you go camping while fishing it is easily disconnected and taken ashore. Also there is no wiring to instal except the jumper leads between your 1st & 2nd battery. Mine cost $165 and is working well.
