clem Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Went out yesterday on the spur of the moment with my nephew. We had some good hits but no success in landing them.I was leaving the rod in the holders and letting them hook themselves.By the time I start to bring them in they(whatever they were)would have anchord themselves under something.I was using pillies only.We did manage to get some type of "mackeral" I think. It looked like a whiting but was bigger with really long sharp teeth. These were caught after I filleted the pillies and cast fairly close to the rocks. The waves were fairly huge as this was top of the tide.It got a bit dangerous so we called it a day. There is a saying in "AFRIKAANS" that translates to something like this. "Wrather scared John than dead John" so no chances for me. Anyway I will definately go there again but I do have a question for those who can help.Where can I get some live bait in the surrounding area? I can only imagine what will happen if I do get some as I was getting hits on dead pillies. Anyway that is it from me. Cheers Clem
luderick59 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 hi clem the fish sounds like a pike that you caught there is live bait there with a bit of berley and a bait jig under a bobby float a word of warning it can be a dangerous spot especially in the swell we have the last 2 days so take care peter
clem Posted March 8, 2009 Author Posted March 8, 2009 Hey there Peter. Thanks for the advice.I notice that the very high and safe rock is always taken when I get there and I end up fishing in the corner. Will my chances improve if I do fish closer to the pool(in the mddle)so to speak and are there less snags?Does the tide also play a roll in the sense of it being small or big.If I were to end up there on a small tide is it worth trying in close for bream or so?I went out last weekend to Cape Banks and ended up fishing very light tackle and soon realized the advantages of doing so.I would also like to try out some lures on a safer day that is when there is a low or small tide.Having said all that I realize that I have fogotten why I was here so the all important question is does fishing in the corner make a difference with my chances? P.S. These questions are out there for all to reply Cheers Clem Peter you have been a help in the past and I thank you for that.
luderick59 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 fish off the pool[if still allowed] throwing into channel running along side the pool fish light 6lb line pea size sinker and fish the rising tide [bigger the better] using cabbage or chicken breast or weed on a no8 hook and let it wash around and you will pick up blackfish and bream play fish to beach to land them peter
ratbag Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 G'day clem Mate be careful down there.I fish the area regulary. As luderick59 said the pool at south Curl Curl is a far better bet with a bit of swell.Just flick your bait out toward the reef and let it wash back to the beach. Or you cauld fish the beach itself
clem Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 Hey there Mulletmug,Peter and whomever reads this.I am not much of a beach fisherman as I have trouble reading the waves/channels and so on.Tried it a couple of times but I am too impatient and had my line most likely in the wrong place.I find messing in the sand a bit of a hassle with having to clean my gear off a lot. When I do fish off the sand I tend to stick in the corners next to some rocks if possible.Having said all that I will by all means fish the beach if I were to have company as fishing alone makes my mind go "bonkers" and it is just plain boring.Going to Windang Beach Tourist Park next weekend and looking forward to catching something at least. I will have a lake, beach and rocks to fish from so I should at least get action. Anyway Cheers for now Clem
jewgaffer Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Hi Clem there have been good reports coming in of jewfish being caught off Newport Beach so it may pay to have a session down there when the swimmers have gone instead of fishing off the rocks particularly if there is rain about or if it becomes windy. Cheers jewgaffer
clem Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 Hey there Byron. Will keep that in mind.Like I said,I would need company to keep my sanity on a beach. Hope all goes well with your op that is if it is still on track.I would like to be a fly on the wall if you are one of those "NAUGHTY OLD MEN" who gives the nurses a "hard" time Look forward to actually meeting up with you so don't worry about us not having our session together. I am a happy go lucky kind a guy so whatever happens happens.I have my to stress for me about things other than what is not important.(If that makes any sense ) Trying to get my passport stamped to have a fish on thursday evening.Been a good boy this week and my browny points are in a possitive for a change.Just such a lot happening at the moment. Cheers clem

Cheers clem Now that was really funny!!! The same here, I have to send out a week or two notice to let her know I am going fishing otherwise I get the whole story about not spending time with her.... Curl Curl is a good spot to fish, I normally go close to the pool, just south of it. Fishing off the sandbank maybe 15m out. Get all kind but at least you don't get to many snags. Some times when its calm you can use a float but that is not to often.... lekker man! H

Sorry Groper and Kayakman I beat you guy's to it.I am off to wet a line right now.Planning to go to palm beach alongside the pool for some tailor hopefully. If it is dead I might be brave enough to push my curfew and pop in at curl curl. jewgaffer Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 ........I find messing in the sand a bit of a hassle with having to clean my gear off a lot....... ...........Going to Windang Beach Tourist Park next weekend and looking forward to catching something at least. I will have a lake, beach and rocks to fish from so I should at least get action. Anyway Cheers for now Clem Hi Clem Tell you what mate, I run a few rods at a time and more often on near locked up drag, and I couldn't fish a beach or the rocks etc at all without having my rod holders with me.......... For making good do it yourself rod holders for your landbased beach and rock fishing etc Clem, just grab hold of a length of heavy duty white high pressure swimming pool pipe and make your own rod holders................ Cut up about half a dozen rod holders some 800mm each in length and some at 1metre..... Buy a small rubber headed bricklayers mattock to drive them into the sand, or the bank and you can wedge them in between rocks.... Have someone who has dropsaw do a semi oval angle cut in the centre in one end for the spike, rather than trying to cut out the pipe yourself and finishing up with only a tail section of spike exposed as it will weaken with use and eventually the sand spike section will break off........ Good luck on the beach at Windang around midnight Cheers jewgaffer
