tide'n'knots Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 (edited) Hi guys, After being inspired by a recent post by stewy ( sordie) about catching bream in hen and chicken bay I decided to have a crack myself this morning. I arrived in H&C about 7am and threw every hardbody and soft plastic known to man for 2hours and only managed 1 small flattie which was released and lost 2 lures I just cant get the hang of this soft plastic stuff! so I decided to go back to what i do best - bait fishing. I anchored at the mouth of H&C near the marina and soon had 3 small tailor and a large yakka, then headed down to woolwhich just out from the valencia st wharf to try for a jew on some fresh slabs, even though the rods i had brought with me were more suited to bream fishing. 5mins after the rods went out i was sitting back enjoying a fresh cuppa when one of the rods buckled in the rod holder and started taking line - I imediately thought Yeah jewie!! There were no destinct head shakes more like a thumping on the end of the line and a couple of mins later a 63cm kingie hit the deck! the wind then started to pick up and become a nuisance and so did the small snapper so I decided to seek shelter just around the corner in the lane cove river. First cast with a hawkesbury prawn and the rod buckles and I landed a nice 30cm bream soon after. By this time I had already put out another rod with a slab bait for something bigger and thats exactly what hit it 1min later! The rod bent over in the holder and started to take a bit of line and I suspected by the way it fought that it might be a decent flathead and I was right - 63cm. I took this photo at home because the other photos didnt do it justice. I ended up with 4 bream and 2 flathead as well as several just under size whiting before the wind completely ruined the day by turning the boat in the opposite direction to the current, All in all pretty good. this is the entire catch taken on a rock on the shore. Twin 1 MARCEL I think our next trip together will have to be a boat trip!! I seem to do better from a boat! Well done Pete and you certainly produced a nice bag of fish. Cheers Stewy I look forward to that stewy! most sundays or mondays suit me. Everyone tells me that your supposed to catch more on sps than bait! I thought my problem was the fibreglass rods I was using so I went out and bought a graphite rod - It still made no difference, although at least I now have the right equiptment - I think!

jewgaffer Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Well done Pete! ...what a difference a day makes in regards to conditions and weather.... a dramatic barometric pressure rise of four points overnight and rising to 1018 around 2pm and steadying at 1020 as I write made today a hot action day and a much different day to yesterday being almost the direct opposite in barometric influence, weather and conditions. Well done mate in getting a nice variety of fish on bait. Cheers jewgaffer

If I had headed straight for where the fish were caught I feel confident that I would have done much better, unfortunately you cant do everything at the same time! pete.
cat-as-trophy Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Now that was one excellent day on the water my friend, and it goes to show that bait works every time. Is good to see someone mixing up the types of baits, lures, plastics etc. Keep up the good work and cant wait for the next report. Cheers Mrs Flightmanager

It will be an honour fishing with a SP guru such as yourself. (grovel, grovel) more than happy to help out with fuel expenses also! pete.
glennmreid Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Well done on a great mixed bag Pete. Good kingie as well. Bet you were surprised to see that on the end of your hook.
tide'n'knots Posted March 8, 2009 Author Posted March 8, 2009 Well done on a great mixed bag Pete. Good kingie as well. Bet you were surprised to see that on the end of your hook. For some reason Glenn it didnt seem to go as hard on the light gear as they do on heavy gear, I have a sneaky suspicion that the softly softly approach has some merit with kings! until they run you around a post!

(grovel, grovel) more than happy to help out with fuel expenses also! pete. I am no Guru ,trust me. I have been shown how its done by plenty of experienced fishos and once shown its just a matter of getting out on the water. Fuel costs??? I use about 3 buxs worth on a trip and thats just going to other spots. The leccy does most of the work and that costs bugger all. We will get together for a session and show you the finer points Pete. Pm me with your details. Cheers Stewy
