jewgaffer Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 are poddies good bait when dead as well as live? i know they are best live, but if they die are they still good? like better than a pillie 4 example? Hi Diver If there was not much interest in your poddy mullet when it was alive and well or even struggling to swim, a dead fish laying on the bottom will eventually get some sort of slow fossicker interested in it, that is if they do happen to come along and find it........ When you think about it, a dead fish is more of a crab bait and a dead fish can be easily presented to make it much more attractive ...... For instance a poddy mullet can be opened up underneath from the tail to the gill plate and gutted..... A couple of well placed hooks other than gangs can spread the bottom section apart loosely to show more flesh.... What I do with small poddy mullet, yellowtail etc that are too small for butterflying is pull the sides apart and pin the sides around the top of the fish so that flesh and blood is more of less showing all the way around the bait...... I use two hooks and if dead poddies are big enough to butterfly, I just leave the backbone in, cut the fillets off and pin the fillets around the opposite way to have the skin on the inside of the bait. Cheers jewgaffer

Cheers jewgaffer Poddys presented this way with one hook through the tail and leave the fillets flapping on either side waving in the current make top dead baits! but as jewgaffer says always turn the fillets around so the flesh is facing out and the skin is facing in. Big flatties or school jew even big bream will inhale them whole! good luck. Pete.
Davemmm Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 The fillet of a poddie that has only just died is an absolute killer bream bait. A bit of blood and guts hanging off brings the buggers all the way from Jervis Bay to Port Hacking in about two minutes. Well that may be a little over the top but they are attractive for a heap of species. Dave
zephi Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 10cm-15cm poddy mullets... I scale it, then cut a small opening in the gut. Put the hook from the middle of the gills from the bottom and expose the hook point where the incision was made in the gut. Thread some line/string in the mullets eye and secure tie around the hook. That should hold it together. I don't know if this is a good way of presenting the bait, because I haven't had any success with it, but it lasts much longer than a fillet. A lot of the time it's left untouched for hours. Occasionally may have some pretty big pulls on the bait, but no hook up yet. Reel in only a head and spine remaining. Might have more luck with ganged hooks on it though. I've caught bream on mullet fillet but most of the time it gets eaten by pickers often. Never thought about flipping the flesh inside-out. Going to give it a go next time.
