G'Day all

I recently had a discussion with a couple of fishos at the Pub, and it was amusing to here the humble flatty tagged with so many different nicknames. The general consensus was:

Less than 40cm = Frog

41cm to 64cm = Flatty

65cm to 79cm = Lizard

80+ = A Croc

For me, a flatty is everything upto 75cm, and after that it deserves 'Croc' status! :biggrin2:

Now, here are the two questions that the 'peanut gallery' couldn't agree on, regardless of the amber nectar imbibed :  :

When does a jewfish advance from a Soapie to a Jewy, and when is a kingy regarded as a hoodlum? Fire away folks, but bear in mind this is simply a tongue-in-cheek look at the inebriated musings of some very keen fishos :074:

...and when is a kingy regarded as a hoodlum?...

You know - it's about time we started with serious issues around here!

On the King front, I reckon:

<65cm = Rat

65-89cm = Kingy

90cm + = Hoodlum

Though I wonder if the Hoodlum should start at 100cm.

I think 60 and under is a rat, everything else is a kingy, then hoodlums start between the 100-110cm range. I rekon jewies are soapies until about 3-4kg. And i call all flatties lizards! Until croc status at about 80-100 cm depending on my generosity!

Hi Hodgey School jewfish are regarded as being from 5-12 Kilos in size and travel in schools most of the time. School jewfish hunt as a pack and break off in groups of about five males to each female and go into estuaries whenever conditions suit the female cycle. Although estuary conditions can suit longer residency, mass entry generally starts as the summer weather cools down and this can be early or late depending on season........

Soapie jewfish cling to the school and hunt in clusters not far away from the school and go back with the school when they go down into their holes. The holes are their homes until they are big enough to go outside and fend from themselves, ...they school up again in the deepwater holes along the outside shoreline and safe outside reefs that suit......

Anything above 12 kilos are referred to as Mulloway.

In the Sydney area, the cliffs between the mouth of the Hacking and Coalcliff feed the beach frontage between the Hacking and Botany Bay and as far north as Maroubra and Lurline Bay Coogee, I believe.

The Stanwell Park to National Park high cliff areas also feeds Botany Bay, the Georges and the Hacking to some extent with mature soapies, school size jewfish, and of course Mulloway!!

.......It is not unusual to have a pack of Mulloway among school size jewfish..... Mulloway are also are known to accompany soapies miles upriver and also join the school size males coming in escorting female mulloway or school size females up river at breeding time.... Some say Mulloway actually kill soapies for some reason which could be because they are weeds or imperfects.

Hoodlum in Sydney I though was over 1 m. In NZ i would't want to guess but fry would describe our small kings

So I think it is also dependent on where you are living and what waterway you are on. Hell those Qld and VICs still have different fish names let alone argueing about at what size they are called what.

I say we should have 5 beers and start a discussion and by 10 beers we will be a lot closer to forgetting why we started looking for an answer!!! .

 Pel that would be a nice old debate that would. After 10 beers the general consensus of opinion would be to go out and punish hoodlums and big mulloway with fly rods and some fancy Japanese 8lb braid that won't break until midnight but feels soft on the hands and the final hand shake will be based on the fact that British minnow centre pins handle 5lb Japanese braid like no other.

my thoughts-

rats - under 65cm

kingies between 65 and 100cm

anything over 100cm is a hoodlum.

soapies up to 45cm

45cm to about 90cm or 15lb - schoolies

over 90cm jew, jewie or mulloway.

At the end of the day it is all a matter of opinion and I think opinions will vary depending on how hard it is for any given individual to crack a certain size!

For me personally I have never cracked a flathead over 65cm so anything over that for me would be considered a croc!!!

It's really very simple...

up to 70cm .... flathead

70+.... someone else's

Harbour Kingies

under 65cm ... rats

over 65cm ... somewhere else

Umm i was wondering on the topic of rat kingfish... whats the differecne between a kingy and a rat????

thanks

Hi mate

So far, the general consensus is the term 'rat' is applied to undersized kingies.

Thanks for the info everyone. I will now begrudgingly go back to the pub, consume a couple of bundy cans, and regale the fishos with my new found information!
