Its been a while since my last post so i thought id report on todays fishing ..

Headed out to the spit to pick up some squid around 4 30...managed only 4 or 5.. Is there a particular reason why squid stop or slow around 5ish? Is it the light?

It was then off to Clifton Gardens to try my luck for some Kings even though it was probably not light enough yet.. used a large SP and the fresh squid on gangs. Caught an octopus on the squid which made for a very difficult release because it insisted on holding onto every piece of gear i had on the deck. Also managed to catch another squid on the large SP which i thought was strange as the squid was smaller than the SP itself..

anyway with no kings in the boat yet i decided to head off towards some other markers in the harbour.. after some tips from a friendly water cop on which one to hit i anchored up and was on within 30 seconds and the drag was screaming. Pulled in a 60cm king which i reluctantly released.. (as it was my first!) few mins later and another 59cm king. No keepers unfortunately but it made for some fun angling.

Picked up a red rock cod on the way home which i couldn't be bothered filleting so i let it go on its way.

All in all a good day and was glad to finally say that i've lost my Kingy virginity :)

Well done on cracking the kingies mate, those occies can be a real pain in the ass at times, really confusing well you keep pulling up empty hooks when you've seen no bites on it, they're usually the culprits, then if you catch them, getting rid of them is another thing.

Did you see anything on the surface or any sharks around?

Seems like there havent been as many sharks noticed in the last week.

Well done mate!!!

The first is always a big moment - the smile from ear to ear tells the tale.

good work on the release tho; it's a moment filled with mixed emotions, but th8e feeling is worth it - even if it's a legal fish.

the flood gates will most certainly open now!

Why would u want to get rid of them???

Fantastic bait ... and even better when grilled on the bbq, preferably after its been marinated in lemon juice, olive oil & white wine for a few hours (dont forget the chilli and garlic either)

SUPER EFFORT Mate!

I caught my first king this summer @63cm. It was hard to send back into the blue stuff at the time but feels bloody good now!

We need to keep our disapline and send all undersized fish back in for another day.

Well done!!!

Firstly well done on your first Kings.

<Is there a particular reason why squid stop or slow around 5ish? Is it the light?>

I find squiding slow down around the bridge if the tide is too strong. Monday morning low was 7am ish so I should imagine the tide still ripping through at 5am.

Regardless of tide the I find the squid tend to move out into the deeper water (in 60-70 feet east of the bridge) as the sun comes up.

Didnt see any action on the surface or sharks the whole day actually.. and yes the octopus probably should have ended up on the bbq or on a hook
