a boat Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Hi all.. Does anyone have any experience with these motors?.. I want to know if they have any known issues or if they are a good reliable donk. I am looking at putting one on my Haines 470. Any feedback welcome...Good and Bad.. Thanx Bardi Hi, the 90HP Mercury is a basic 3 cylinder carby engine and as far as that technology goes they are fine, no better or worse than other "dirty" outboards. It will use more fuel and be noiser than the newer/better clean engines, but the price should reflect that. If it is a 2008 model it will still be under warranty and it should come with SST prop and set-up right they perform well and really the only 90HP that outruns it is the V4 90HP Johnson / Evinrude. What are they wanting for it because with the deals like "cash back" on now and being a Raider member you might find a clean tech engine is not that much dearer BUT a MUCH better engine. When I drive a boat with an old tech engine on the back it reminds how far outboard technology has come with the newer "clean" tec engines. PM me if you would like to know what the Raider price is for a new outboard. Cheers, Huey.
Bardy Posted March 18, 2009 Author Posted March 18, 2009 Huey.. PM sent mate. Bardy Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 Well...I made the 1 hr 40 journey to check out this motor and it was rubbish.. I won't name the dealer who heralded it as a fantastic unit BUT it was not worth a dime. The thing had marine growth all over the trim/tilt mechanism and all the powdercoat/paintwork was had long since been removed in that portion of the motor.. The cowling itself was scratched to pieces to the point where it looked like a rottweiler had taken a liking to it and was determined to gnaw its way through it in several places. The only conclusion I could come to is that if the owner looked after the outside like this who knows what has happened to the inside! Anyway, u live and learn. The lesson here is even though you ask all the right questions sometimes others are not so reliable in their responses... So the search continues... Bardi
a boat Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Hi Bardi, sorry to hear that mate and I think everyone who has been around boats long enough would have a story like this about some dealers in this industry. As in our PM there are some good deals happening on new engines at present and the latest list I have from Mercury they have some carby 90HP at last years prices and OPTIs are not that much dearer than the bacis carb engines. This gets you a brand new outboard without any of the concerns of a second hand one. PM if you would like details, Cheers, Huey.
