zephyr Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Hi all, this is my first posting but I have to relate what happened to me the other day. I went to Rose Bay boat ramp after peak hour mid week, then went just out to Clarke Island for a couple of hours R&R. I was targetting those elusive (Well to me anyway) kingfish with a full Squid on the bottom and another full Squid just under the surface. In the meantime I was fishing 4kilo line for Bream when I caught a thumper Bream. Just as I got colour I noticed a Kingfish trailing him to the surface, this took my mind off things and with a flick of the tail the Bream was gone. I rebaited and guess what? I hooked the Kingfish on the light gear. I tightened the drag as tight as I dared and hung on. I have never seen line disappear from a real so fast and just as I was starting to see the centre of the spool he turned and started swimming back in my direction. Over the next 20 minutes this happened three more times and with the amount of cranking I had to do I was starting to get puffed. I finally got the fish to the side of the boat and with a sweep of the net I landed a nice 50cm Kingy. After catching my breath I got the fish out of the bait tank and let it go. After so much enjoyment it was a pleasure to see it swim free and I packed up and went home. It does'nt get much better than that.
fishhunter76 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Nice report zephyr. Hopefully the next will be a keeper and the fight ten times better. Good luck next time. Cheers LALA

slinkymalinky Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Nice first report Zephyr. Sounds like hard work but a lot of fun on light gear.... Kings have a nasty habit of always finding the lightest outfit you have out. Just wait till it happens with a 70 or 80cm model... and it will. Cheers, Slinky

Agree Slinky - on the weekend between my mate and I we had a 50lb, a 30lb and an 8lb outfit out with a variety of squid baits. The only king we boated all day grabbed the lightest outfit. Anyway as you say a lot of fun. Cheers
