Nashy Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Having been told at 9am this morning that my brother and myself didnt have to work today we decided on a quick session in the boat down the hacking and ended up fishing only 300 metres from where we launched the. stayed for about two and a half hours and managed a decent flatty at 52cm on a peppered prawn. we were getting smashed left right and centre by everything but couldnt seem to have them hook up properly, many times breaking off just below the surface. It then came as a bit of a surprise to us that my brother caught a squid using a 4 inch pumkin seed and it wasnt long after that they were everywhere. Neither of us have ever caught squid before and have never bothered trying to catch them so it comes as no surprise we didnt have any squid jigs, but i'll be sure to have some next time. Ended up being a lot of fun and was a whole lot better than working.
brendong Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Nashy I had a mate that managed to land a squid on 'Popper' over the weed beds the other day and they had several hits....I think when they are hungry and in big numbers they will go just about anything. Sounds like you might have been down gray's point way?
snapR Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Musty, From my experience in the hacking any of the bays (Dolans, Burranear Gunnamatta...with most holding some good deep pockets. Aim for those deeper holes otherwise all you will get is little reddies ( annoying ). Fish around these deeper areas just away from the drop offs and around moored boats and you usually do ok. Land based wally's wharf is good for squid at night... Spent a lot of my high school years fishing the hacking..love that place. Dom Where abouts in the hacking do u fish? I can never seem to catch anything when i fish there. Beautiful stretch of waterway though isnt it. Almost worth a day out on the water alone minus the fish! Musty

Hit the wharf there last night for a fish, trying for anything and some squid but they werent having any of it with the squid jigs but they were going for the soft plastics and live bait. my mate did manage to hook up an occy about 60cm long with the squid jig but let it sink to the bottom and it stuck to the rocks as well as a 40cm taylor on a live yakka.
