The Poacher
Hi Fishking, There are the xxxxxxxxxx DVDs which will teach you 90% of everything you need to know. Also, I reckon 50% of the posts on fishraider are on kings so there are some good tips there. Basically, kings arent that hard. You need solid tackle (at least 15kg braid), live bait (squid or yellowtail) and some sort of underwater structure. Get these 3 together and you are well on your way. The harbour and botany bay are heaps better than the Hawkesbury or Pittwater. Hope you get some. The Poacher.

slinkymalinky
If you don't have livebait, fresh squid strips or heads are very good. They have to be fresh though if you want to catch kings consistently well. You will catch them on store bought squid... even the horrible frozen fink rubbish occasionally... but nowhere near as consistently as with squid you've caught yourself. As poacher said... livebait is the no.1 choice... particularly for better sized fish. There's a saying that the best kingy and jewie fishermen are the best squid fisherman. Once you have good bait and gear that will handle a decent king (10lb braid is fine for rats in open water but I'd rather be in with a chance to land bigger fish near structure so 15kg is my usual too), the rest is easy. greg123
i've caught all my kings on really fresh squid. They love it. try the markers around the harbour or any structures in general. They seem to hit it harder if the squid has a head, often i've found they smash the head off then just nibble at the body until you get a new squid on. Good luck. jamesds
You're mixing units (10lb braid versus 15kg braid). 15kg is about 30lb, a massive step up from 10lb. Not having a go, just wanting clarification of what you meant Once you have good bait and gear that will handle a decent king (10lb braid is fine for rats in open water but I'd rather be in with a chance to land bigger fish near structure so 15kg is my usual too), the rest is easy. dalton
welcome Fishking, yes you cant go wrong in the harbour and the bay, i would suggest buying a downrigger when they are not busting up on the surface you can get the bait right to them. i have caught them on 6lb braid and with a light bream rod that will test ya , either way when you hook up to a kinghy you will know by the burning forearms and sore shoulders ha. Not having a go, just wanting clarification of what you meant I meant exactly what I said but to clarify, 10lb is fine on small kings away from structure, 30lb is what I use for bigger fish. If you find a school of small kings working the surface in the middle of the harbour, 10lb is a great fun way to catch them. Yes... its a big step up but if you try catching kings on 10lb near a harbour marker you're going to lose a lot of fish. SLinky
jamesds
Thanks Slinky - just wasn't sure if it was a typo or deliberate, thanks for clearing that up I meant exactly what I said but to clarify, 10lb is fine on small kings away from structure, 30lb is what I use for bigger fish.
