Interstate Engine Transport

I might be purchasing an engine from a bloke down in S.A and i want to know how i would go about getting it brought up here? If any one knows any good carriers can they send me a PM, and how much would I be looking to pay?

My other concern is that i am buying it off the internet so wont have a chance to inspect it, is this insanely dumb?! Its a 30hp Johnson 2 stroke 1987 model, has just been serviced and has 138psi in both cylinders. This will be my first boat so I dont really know anything about the engines, does this all sound ok? Any other questions I should ask?

Thanks in advance!

Depends on what price but buy local, buy more recent than that and check it out fully. Not only about compression but about thermostats and head gasket service at which time you check the water galleries for corrosion etc. Especially need to check avaliability of powerpacls and some parts on older stuff as well.

25- 30hp are a common size and hold value well so buy a good one and treat it well and you will just about get your money back and a lot of use inbetween.

There is some honest sellers and some great older motors about but a 10-15 year newer will probably give you better service and less hassle.

Tell sponsers what you want and see what is coming in astrade ins on the new etec 30hp they should be starting to fit about now.

If it was local and a decent mechanic could look at it , run it and possibly lift head then I would say go for it. Depends on how much risk you want to take and there are bargains out there.

Compression guages unless calibrated and good quality , unless used properly can give all sorts of readings.

Consistancy between cyl is the most important ( as long as pressures are reasonable to start with ) and honest history.

Dicko tell us what you want. min HP , shaft length, elec tilt trim start,, remote or tiller steer, and price range and you might be surprised what someone has in the garage locally and you can get it checked out with a lot less risk of ending up with a lemon. Talk with the sponsers on a comparison of actual real world power output of a old 30hp compared to a lightweight 10 year new 18 or 25 hp as there is some very strong 25hp motors.

True, i hadnt thought about it like that pelican, thanks! Il be fitting it to a 15ft aluminium centre console so am looking for a 25-50hp, but ideally a 30hp+. To be honest i really dont want to spend over 2k, hence my need to look at older models! I sent a PM to Huey ages ago but never got a reply so I assumed he must not sell 2nd hand engines? If this is incorrect i will send him another one though...

Has the console already got controls and steering and if so what brand as new ones can get expensive so better to use what you have if in OK nick? With CC and floor that won't be a lightweight jobby so make sure you are looking at motors with big CC. What motor did it used to have and did it perform OK?

If the budget is an issue had you considered selling the 15ft c/c and with the proceeds purchasing a late model 13 or 14 ft tiller steer tinny? The smaller tinny would have the bonus of being cheaper to run and probably quicker if you were otherwise going to put an older model 35hp on a 15fter.

Pelican - i think the old motor was a 40 and yeah it went pretty good. Hasnt been used in like 8 or 9 years probably. Yeah it still has all its steering and controls which are in pretty good nick.

Dezmo - I have thought of that, but there is a bit of sentimental attachment to the boat as it was my grandfathers and he passed away not so long ago. So i would consider just buying a 12ft tinny and keeping this one in the garage for a few more years until i can afford to repower it properly. Plus i would like to be able to walk around to cast plastics and stand up etc. Also wouldnt mind being able to head out to longy or other places offshore with a couple of mates and may not be able to do that in a smaller boat.

But i guess beggers cant be choosers! Maybe i will have to have a look around for some smaller tiller steers... or just face the fact that i cant get a boat for another few years!
