Hi live baiter First of all I'm no expert on rod blanks but like other members I am interested in following the outcome of your questions....... I know what a good rod feels like by comparing it with other rods I have around the same line class ..........For instance one rod in the same line class may handle a fish or keep the pressure on a squid better than the other, yet the other rod feels better when casting sufficient lead to get the best performance compared to same on the other rod............Having said that I take it that "hastings" is one particular brand of rod blank used by Daiwa for their Morethan Branzino rods and "graphite usa" is another brand of rod blank made in the States and brought out to Australia and made up by a rod maker would that be right???

If that's the case it seems you are asking an opinion from a member who may have had the chance to compare rods made up from these two blanks as finished products?

As to your question on a US made blank ie the "graphite usa" being 30% dearer than the Daiwa from the word go as I understand it to be......Given the value of the Australian dollar and import charges etc from the USA and the fact that Daiwa is well established in Australia, and we are part of the Asia Pacific region and buying from that source, and the fact that the US product is 30% dearer than the blank apparently used by Daiwa, Iwould say that price wise the blanks would be on par in what would be a competitive market if you take a line thru other items imported into both countries or made in the US and then sent out to Australia and sold at retail prices here adding various charges along the way.....

In a nutshell I have given my opinion on the price comparison of the two brands of blanks and it seems you are perhaps looking for an expert opinion from members who may be familiar with rod making and comparing blanks in the same line class...??

Perhaps you can elaborate further and provide more details so that others might be able to advise?

EDIT Hi again live baiter....Going off the heading in the topic .... "Hastings, Graphite Usa, Daiwa Morethan Branzino"...... are there three different blanks that you are asking an opinion on as finished products ie a Hastings blank, a Graphite USA blank and and a blank used by Daiwa for the Morethan Branzino model ?

Cheers

Graphite USA have a "duel helix" construction. This means that the blank does not go "egg shaped" in cross section when under load. They are far superior to "off the shelf mass produced" rods irrespective of brand with a few exceptions.

GUSA has been owned by a few companies including Hastings and has recently changed hands again, from what I've read on some american forums the last change is for the better. Its worth noting the locally sold blanks have been tailored to local condtions and may be slightly different than the US version even with the same blank number. The Aussie versions are OK and are supposed to be released to the US as well. I'm not sure a price comparision is fair in this case but a the duel helix gives a tougher though more expensive rod.

sorry guys,

did not mean to confuse anyone but what i meant was three different blanks.

say that they are the same class and yet one is about 30% more in cost.

ok, that does not matter too much as they are all quite expensive anyway.

so the question is.... which one is superior and in which way?

could the morethan branzino be on par at a lesser price due to being mass produced?

thanks

Hastings are the manufacturers of GUSA blanks so there is no difference between them. Having said that though there are at least 3 different types of blanks that Hastings makes and GUSA is one of them. I guess your question can only be answered if you know which hastings blank diawa uses. The GUSA is the most expensive Hastings blank and definately worth the extra cash. Maybe a custom stick on a Hastings blank could be an option as well ?

I had a few very long discussions with the Australian distributor of the GUSAs before I ordered a beautiful 24kg Jigging blank. It is well worth the money I spent on the blank (over $500). I spiral wrapped it and it is AWESOME!!!

Havent seen the diawas but if they are a Hastings blank then you will not be dissapointed.

sorry for the further confusion but i didnt say daiwa uses a hastings usa blank.

i was just saying that daiwa's rod is quite pricey and if they were that costly, then how would they compare to the GUSA blanks.

i mean, its cool to look good but when it comes time to perform, looking good isnt gonna get you the results!

What are you going to chase and what model rods were you looking at?

I bought mine to chase snapper with, nice to cast with 1/2oz heads but I found it just didn't have the balls to set hooks on long casts with so much line out.

Some others that are cheaper are better suited for snapper IMO.
