Seagoon
Gidday all. Had a bait tank water pump failure on the weekend. Major inconvenience especially since I had a full load of yakkas on board, and was squidding with the intention of putting some squid in there too... How often do people have to replace them? Anyhow had one fail recently? Both my bilge pump and bait tank pump are Rule 500gph, identical. So i bought two new ones, and from now on I'll carry a spare. But ill run it from the cigarette lighter, and put a length of hose on it too. If another one goes, then i'll put the spare in. And then change brands probably, and get the absolute best I can. This fresh water pump is probably only a year and a half, or two years old. The bilge pump has been in for the same length of time, and is running OK still. Is this the normal life expectancy for a salt water pump???
micksfishn
both of my 2 pumps are old as and still going good full salt water use be interesting to see how long they are suppose to last for mick
WANNAFISH
Freshwater pump obviously will corrode or detriorate the internals quicker than a pump design for saltwater use and live bait pump would have a high wear and tear turnover than a bilge pump. I only just had to replace my pump last week and that pump only lasted about 6 months! If my new pump does not last at least 12 months i will change brands. slinkymalinky
G'day Seagoon, I had my Rule 500gph pump on the bait tank fail after about 18 months too. I use it pretty hard and with occasional weed blockages, a water inlet system that meant it ran almost dry under way and getting fishing line around the impella once or twice, it's not surprising the bearings went eventually. I solved each of those problems pretty much and haven't had any problems with the replacement yet (now also about 18 months old) Cheers, Slinky
Seagoon
Interesting... now that I think about it after reading your post slinky, I recall last time I went our, it was cavitating a lot (so prob running dry a bit). Hmmm... ill have to look into that...
